Skydiving, a very zen experience
    #1751889 - 07/26/03 11:01 PM (20 years, 8 months ago)

Nothing is more "living in the moment" than jumping out of a plane nearly two miles from the ground (10,000 feet) and accelerating to 120 miles an hour for 37 seconds and pulling your cord at six thousand feet to enjoy a canopy ride of about five minutes. Nothing makes you feel more alive.

I went for the first time this spring and I plan to go again here in a week or two.
Has anyone else done this, and if so, did you consider it to be a spiritual experience???

I highly recommend it. I did a tandem jump, which means an instructor was strapped to the back of me during the jump. Everyone who I talked to it about (people who haven't skydived) said that was stupid and they would rather do it themselves. But when you have just opened your chute, it is nice having someone with thousands of jumps telling you how to steer and whatnot, plus, a tandem jump only takes 20 minutes of training, then you get a nice 20 minute plane ride and the experience of a life time. Also, I get to say that I have ridden in a plane, I have just never landed in one.

right before I jumped, leaning out of the plane, I was thinking about all of the bad things I had done in my life, and how, if there was a christian god, he had the perfect opportunity to kill me, but I lived.

Also, I figured, if I survived, I had a great experience, and if I died, I died of my own accord and i would have died during a great experience. Definately worth $150.

I would love to skydive but im scared shitless of the idea. I know the freefall would be one of the funnest things but I dont think I could have fun until i was sure that my shute would open...maybe i would...but i know the drift back to land after. Falling has gotta be my #1 fear...im not afraid of death, i can think of no way i wouldnt mind dying...i could be tortured indefinately...but not fall. i love airplanes, but i always get paranoid. =[

I agree skydiving is grate , I have 32 freefall jumps you need 30 to get your licence.
I don?t skydive any more thou was a grate experience when I did.
I never did tandem because I wanted to learn on my own, but If you just want a one time experience is well worth it.
What I learned with skydive was the meaning of fear.
If you want to feel your balls jump to your mouth do skydiving!
It is a grate challenge to confront those feelings.
And is true about the feeling of being alive, you become so aware that even your vision changes, the notion that this could be the last act in your life is very powerful.
In one particular jump I when into a "zone" as soon as I exited the plane time slowed down, I was so at peace, I was seeing the ground get closer yet, I almost did not care I was mesmerized, even thoughts crossed my mind like, what will happen if I just keep going, and then boom My reptilian brain kicked in screaming pull, pull, pull.
Well skydiving was a big thing in my life especially I did most of it in Arizona?s Desert.

Ahh... the beauty. It definitely puts things in perspective.
Peace.

Best. Thing. Ever.

I've only jumped once (tandem), but am looking at purchasing my own pack and canopy right now and enrolling in classes to get jump certified. I think there is more potential for personal addiction in this one activity than in any of the other things I've been addicted to in my lifetime (cycling, tripping, baseball cards, paddling, in no particular order).

Seriously. Do it.
