I Managed To Find A Hoodia (Pic)
    #1752563 - 07/27/03 07:44 AM (20 years, 8 months ago)

Been looking for one of these for a while. This little cactus is at the centre of a huge Bio-Piracy row. One which will make a small African tribe millionaires.

Apparently, its a very powerful appetite suppressant, you can understand why the large corporate chemical companies are so interested.

Theres loads of info on the net relating to the Hoodia.

Down to luck, Searching the local garden centres for Trichs and found it. It stood out on its own - they only had the one. Cost less than $3.

Don't get me wrong - I don't need to lose weight, just curious as to how effective it is. I am seriously contemplating trying it.

I watched a documentary about it, and the bushmen broke off about 4 inches (3/4 inch diameter), removed the spines and just ate it.

They reckoned they didn't feel the need to eat for about 36hrs. They used it primarily when they were on long hunts for proper food.

It's a beautiful plant.
I believe the bl**dy drug companies are presently trying to synthesise the active ingredient within the plant as we speak.
I saw one in bloom a couple of years ago at a cactus nursery. The flowers smell very unpleasant.
However, it is a succulent and not a cactus and belongs to the Asclepiadaceae family.
It is native to South Africa.
I hope the tribe get their dosh.............

Regards
chrisesq

is the cactus sacred?
a company has patented banisteriopsis caapi once but the patent was withdrawn because the south american indians have protested severely and gone mad when they knew about the patent shit...

Sounds like crap anyway, from a legal standpoint. After all, Mother Nature has the Prior Art thing going. Now, if they GM'd it that'd be another issue...

i might have not expressed myself well, mr attorney... i meant the indians made pressure and the patent had been withdrawn, you can read it in full details on www.erowid.org.

for one to get a patent one must proof they've produced a significantly different strain of a plant or to find a species with unknown proprieties and none of those things were really made by the patent claimer...

happier?

I just saw a program on Worldlink TV about hoodia.

http://www.worldlinktv.org/programming/programDescription.php4?tz=0&code=bushmen

You can find worldlink on bith DirecTV and Dish Network.

I'd like to get a Hoodia if anyone knows a good (ethical) place to get some.

What exactly is the difference between a succulent and a cactus?

Succulent is a plant form and Cactaceae is a plant family. Cacti are succulents. All Cactaceae are of American origin.

Anyone know if the other species of hoodia like ruescii and so on also have the same dietetic significance? And if so are there any new links some a youse guys might have found lately. I would like to nurture a couple of these. Like said, ebay prices are huge. Fat peeps hoping for a fix. People don't realize that they would need a whole farm of hoodias to snack on them every day.

Those things are really hard to find in cactus form. I just did a search and found mostly just diet pills made from them. Even my favorite cacti and succulent retailers didn't have them and they have an extensive list of species.
That one place that was mentioned has them but I think there price is way too much for me.
