These shrooms don't make me trip (part II)
    #1751578 -

I've posted about this in the past and also have mentioned it in 'the pub' - (sorry about posting it to multiple boards, but i really want to get to the bottom of this issue).

The bottom line is neither me nor my wife are tripping on the shrooms I'm growing. I ate 6 grams last night, she ate 4 and we just didn't get anywhere. We've got a friend that we've fed them to as well- he actually says he trips, but i'm now figuring he's just a lightweight. What could the problem be? Here's a short list of my ideas. I'd very much appreciate someone telling me what they think the problem could be.

1) crap spores - yes the shrooms grow, but they just don't have any 'pop'. For the record, the spores were golden teachers - the print was ~ 1 year old.

2) poor method of preservation. I have no dessicant to get things 'cracker dry' (i.e Ca Cl2). I blow a fan over 'em for a week or so - maybe two then put them in the freezer. Maybe my 6 grams is only 4 grams of 'cracker dry', but shit - it's a big pile of shrooms and I know I've tripped previously from far less.

3) I (we) are immune to shrooms. I don't really believe this. I've only done shrooms 15-20 times ever. Until recently, l I've always tripped from much smaller doses. Recently I've been 'trying' to trip maybe once every 1-2 months and have been steadlily increasing the dose trying to get there.

I'd appreciate any advice from the sages out there.

peace -

J

what was the condition of the mushrooms once dried? You put them in the freezer? that's not good since they weren't cracker dry. If they were horribly bruised and/or blackened then this can significantly alter the potency and render them magicless.

what did you eat with them? Avoid dairy products since they coat your stomach. Taking any medication? Other than that I can't think of anything off the top of my head that would cause your situation.

putting them in the freezer with any moisture in them could be bad.. as the water particles re-allign themselves when frozen, and expand, they create tiny air pockets which fill with oxegen and nutralize the magic..

point well taken. I'm in the process of trying to get some damp-rid sent to this god-forsaken shithole of a 3rd world country that i live in.

anybody know a supplier that will send damp rid to SE Asia? - I've had no luck searching for one. As an alternative, I'll gladly send a kind soul $$ up front (+ trouble cost) if they promise to send me some by mail.

I dont think this is the best way to store them, but all of mine that I have ever grown have just been placed on a paper towel.. when sufficiently dry, I put them in a plastic bag with the top open, and there they stay untill consumption. Havnt had any problems yet, but what is the reason they must be frozen? As far as I have heard they keep potency dry just as well. As long as decay/contamination is not an issue, I dont see the reason to get them completely "cracker" dry. I'm kind of new at this, but just letting ya know I havnt had any problems yet..

I'm not sure what you mean by that comment. If you're implying that the shrooms I've grown aren't cubies then you are mistaken. If you're just making a joke, it's not very funny.

If those are the shrooms you ate, something went wrong, because they look like p cubes.

Try taking an MAOI with your next dose. Syrian Rue is cheap (5$ for an ounce, I think, from bouncingbearbotanicals.com) and an ounce is alot o fnice doses. Perhaps, tho long odds, your wife and you both have higher than average MAOI levels in your body, and that destroys the psilocybian. have you tried other hallucinogenic drugs, which ones, and towhat effect

yes, I've used plenty of other hallucinogenic drugs, including LSD (my favorite), mescaline, MDMA, and ketamine (i guess the latter two may not be considered hallucinogenic by everyone) and I've always had great experiences with all of the above. Until recently (like since I've been growing my own), I've always been able to trip on cubies. I also tripped as hard as I've ever tripped on Coplandias in Amsterdam.

based in the other responses I've gotten, I'm nearly convinced that what's going wrong is how I dry them and store them. I'm eating 'em fresh next time around.

those look really nice, but you have nothing to use as a reference for scale in the photo to give a perspecitve of how big the shrooms really are. While it seems like yours are bigger, I'm not at all convinced your shrooms are that much larger than the ones I've grown. Maybe your photo is just more of a close up. Got any photos with an object to use as a scale?

As an aside - and maybe others can provide their input on this question - Isn't size irrelevant? Don't small cubies have as much psilocybin per unit volume as large cubies?

Could just be a spore isolate/spore match - a freak of an isolate that produces very little alkaloids.
Funnily, i find that the dosage i require from cubies is quite high compared to other species - maybe your immune to them??:)
Grow some Copelandias and if you eat them fresh, you wont ahve the same problem i promise.

What were yours grown on? Substrate makes a big difference in potency. Also, as BM stated, you could be dealing with weak genetics or genetic compatibility. I would suggest trying another strain, or species as BM said again. Now, the Golden Teacher is not a weak strain, but there are better ones. I am also sure there are quite a few members here that would be glad to offer you up another strain.

I have dried Cubes in many different ways. Over heat, on a fan for a few days, fan then dessicant, and even sun-dried. IME, I have never ended up with extremely weak shrooms. Freezing them with even the smallest amount of water content will rupture the cell walls, exposing the active alkaloids to the environment. This can accelerate the speed of decomposition. Fresh is best. Try eating them fresh, or my favorite: Freshie tea. Be sure to use a dose equivalent to your last, but at a 10x weight gain. Either be brave and slam it, or drink moderately slow. Since you are ingesting quite a bit of mushroom, tea may be easier on the digestion, and speed the onset.

Size of a given mushroom is completely irrelevant to potency. Not to be confused with maturity when picked. A mushroom that has torn its veil and opened up has less psilocybin (and psilocin) per mass than a mushroom that is still in the "rounded" stage before tearing the veil. If one mushroom is large, while another is small given the same level of maturity, then they should in theory have similar potency.

If you have tripped on them before, I have no reason to believe you are immune, especially your wife also.

interesting that you ask that. They did bruise blue, but it was not near as intense an effect as I've noticed in nature. Be assured that I'm going to better monitor the stain versus trip intensity on future batches.

nice reply - thanks. I'm definitely going to stop freezing my shrooms. I'd also like to give the tea a go. While I'm sure i can find a recommended procedure somewhere on this site, I'd appreciate it if you could tell me exactly how you make your tea or better yet, point me at a link that describes the proper procedure. How much water would you use for say - 60 grams of shrooms and how high / how long do you heat it?

As for the substrate, I'm growing on BRF/vermic as outlined in the MMGG v 3.2

you make an interesting point about potency vs stage of development. The same friend that boiled his tea to gravy alos insisted they more most potent prior to the veil breaking.

Take a pint sized jar; use about a cup and a half of water (you want to cover all the shrooms), and a tablespoon of lemon juice. Bring this mixture to a boil, and then remove from heat. Chop shrooms up and throw into jar, replace lid and shake violently. Allow them to soak for a few minutes then repeat. Filter this material with a coffee filter, and be sure to squeeze the shrooms out really well. You can repeat the above again with the filtered shrooms to extract them further.

Flavor to taste and drink, or just slam it like it is. I am still working to perfect my tea making skills, but the above has worked really well, especially shaking them in a jar. I cannot ingest mushrooms anymore, so I have resorted to tea. In my opinion it is just as good, and much easier on the stomach.

I think you need better spores...

I appreicate your attempt to be helpful, but I assure you that I don't trip so much that I've depleted my seratonin.  Besides, while seratonin is indeed critical toward getting off on MDMA, I don't think it plays a part in an LSD or a shroom trip.

As an aside, I'd be willing to bet big $$ that there's many shroomerites out there that have done far more drugs than I have and are still tripping their nuts off on shrooms.

From Watson SJ. Hallucinogens and other psychotomimetics: biological mechanisms.
In: Barchas JD, Berger PA, Cioranello RD, Elliot GR (eds.). Psychopharmacology from theory to practice.
Oxford: Oxford University Press, 1977.

"The current thesis of the effect of indole hallucinogens on 5-hydroxytrypamine might be stated as follows: LSD acts to preferentially inhibit serotonergic cell firing and seems to spare postsynaptic serotnergic receptors. This preference is shared by other simillar hallucinogens but in a limited fashion. Nonhallucinogenic analogs of LSD show no preference. These results suggest that there are two different steric conformation of serotonergic receptors, one of which has higher affinity for LSD than the other. In general, 5-ht is an inhibitory transmitter; thus, when its activity is decreased, the next neuron in the chain is freed from inhibition and becomes more active. Since serotnergic systems appear to be intimately involved int eh control of sensation, sleep, attention, and mood, it may be possible to explain the actions of LSD and other hallucinogens by their disinhibition of these critical systems.

There is also evidence for interaction with dopaminergic systems.

------------------------------------------------------------------------
LSD acts as a 5HT autoreceptor agonist in the raphe nucleus. These autoreceptors are typically considered to be 5HT1As. It also acts as a 5HT2 agonist, which is thought to be the main site of hallucinogenic activity. It's probably best called a a mixed 5HT2/5HT1 receptor partial agonist.

I don't know of its effects on dopamine. Wouldn't be surprised if it has 'em; the systems aren't really functionally separable. The DA effects wouldn't be necessary for hallucinogenic activity, I'd bet.

and

Quote:
It is believed that psilocybin, LSD, and DMT work by mimicking the neurotransmitter serotonin (5-HT), one of the most important and widespread of the brain's synaptic neurochemical messengers. The mimicking occurs because LSD, and particularly psilocybin, possess an almost identical molecular structure to serotonin i.e. their shape is so similar that they are able to 'fool' and infiltrate parts of the brain which process information using serotonergic synapses.

Serotonin is employed in a number of brain structures which seem to control functions like sleep, mood, and general arousal. One of these structures is the raphe system at the base of the brain, whose serotonergic neuronal axons project to all other major areas of the brain, notably the limbic system (which controls emotional responses) and areas of the visual system.

According to noted neuroscientist G.K.Aghajanian, the serotonin-using raphe system has a homeostatic function in which two primary effects emerge. Firstly, in the waking state the system acts to enhance the activity of motor neurons which govern the control of muscular movement. Secondly, and more significantly, during the waking state this same serotonergic system acts to suppress sensory systems, which are those systems relaying information about the external world. This second effect, according to Aghajanian, serves to "screen out distracting sensory cues."

Furthermore, it has been speculated that this homeostatic 'screening out' function maintains a kind of 'balance' of consciousness in which we perceive reality in a 'steady' way, almost as if the serotonergic raphe system were a balancing stick enabling us to walk the 'tightrope' of normal perceptual awareness. If this serotonergic homeostatic balancing system is interfered with, then the perception of reality will be correspondingly altered, so much so that we may plunge off the tightrope into new dimensions of perceived reality. Chemically dismantling the raphe system's screening effect would therefore admit the entry of latent information into consciousness. Is this how agents like psilocybin work?

Most of the detailed physiological experimentation that was carried out with psychedelics in the 60's concentrated on LSD and psilocybin and used rat brains, cat brains, and isolated rat neurons. Perhaps the most important finding was indeed that LSD and psilocybin depress the action of serotonin neurons in precisely the raphe system (a neuronal system shared by rats, cats and humans). The usual activity of the particular serotonergic neurons which psilocybin and LSD depress is inhibitory which means that their normal firing serves to dampen or suppress activity in the those other parts of the brain with which they synapse. Thus it was believed that psilocybin and LSD's dampening effect on serotonergic neurons facilitated an increase in neuronal firing in those areas of the brain in contact with the raphe system (like the aforementioned visual and limbic/emotion systems). It was this effect, this enhancement of neuronal activation, that was believed to correlate with the entheogenic experience itself.

It seemed like a nice neat theory. However, things are never that simple when it comes to the actions of psychedelics. For the above scenario does not take into account the more recently discovered neuropharmacological action of mescaline, another classic entheogen. With not a little theoretical irritation we find that, like psilocybin, mescaline induces the full spectrum of visionary phenomenology but is not known to significantly effect the raphe system. Which means that our raphe theory is not the whole story. Just when it was all looking so clear....

Research over the last decade has revealed that there are distinct kinds of serotonin receptors, or serotonin binding sites, within the brain. In other words, neurons which are modulated by the release of serotonin from other neurons with which they synapse, are not tied down to just one kind of serotonin receptor. In typical fashion, Nature has made things more complex and intriguing than that. In fact, there appear to be many different kinds of serotonin receptor (called sub-type receptors) and it is believed that different psychedelic drugs have differential effects upon these receptors. One particular serotonin receptor though - the so-called 5-HT2 type - appears to represent a common site of action of both psilocybin and mescaline.

5-HT2 receptors are found throughout the cortex and also in abundance in the brain system known as the locus coeruleus which, like the raphe, is situated at the base of the brain. The locus coeruleus processes so many sensory inputs (a flow of incoming data if you like) that it is considered to function as a 'novelty detector' and is able to influence one's state of arousal. By monitoring the constant surge of 'electrochemical traffic' passing through it, the locus coeruleus is able to detect changes in the flow of data should a change occur and thus alert other parts of the brain. According to our expert G.K.Aghajanian, both psilocybin and mescaline bind to these 5-HT2 sites in the locus coeruleus and thus alter the functioning of this system, ultimately raising levels of alertness and arousal. In other words, it once again seems that entheogens function by making more information available to the experiencer.

I stand corrected.

Oh well, i still think my seratonin's fine, it's just bad a case of shroom genetics or poor drying / preservation technique.

Thanks for the lesson.

Two things that I'm sure you could find very easily anywhere in the world are salt and rice. Please don't try to tell me that you can't find rice in South East Asia (JOKE).

Take either of the two or a combination of both and spread it out over a baking pan and place it in the oven at 200F for about an hour. This will completely dry the substance out. Allow it to cool completely and what you have is a very cheap homemade desiccant. Enjoy.

You are very much welcome.

I use the dry salt to dry my shrooms and it works great. One day of air drying and then into the desiccant chamber. My shrooms never get above 75 F ( the temperature in my house) the entire time.

They always snap when I take them out of the desiccant chamber and try to bend them. And you can crumble them to dust with you fingers they are so dry.
