Internet unusually slow. Cause for concern? Surveillance or paranoia?
    #17512379 - 01/07/13 02:31 PM (11 years, 4 months ago)

My Internet is running unusually slow.  I've heard through grapevine this could be a sign of being surveiled.  I'm sure I'm just paranoid but seems wierd man

No. Your isp sees everything you do, regardless of if they want to watch you, It's just whether or not the cops are watching too.

The grapevine doesn't know what they are talking about.  Copying your packets doesn't slow them down.

Check  your ping time with ping 4.2.2.2, and set ping to send 1000 packets to see if you are losing any.  Check the actual speed with speedtest.net.

Is your wifi password protected? If not you might have 100 people freeloading on your network, most of them streaming or torrenting porn in HD.

Most likely getting your wireless network tapped into by a neighbor. Make sure you don't have WEP enabled, and go ahead and change your network key regularly.... Should help.

EDIT: You can edit your routers settings by connecting to it through your browser (usually 192.168.0.1 without a .com) and logging in with the default settings that are for your specific router -  if you don't know this login information, you can look it up online with a list of defaults or look in your user manual. If you really have to, call your ISP.
