What boggles me is how the "steam box" is running Linux, but all the games are made for windows. Could Linux become the new gaming platform? Especially when considering how Microsoft has built Windows 8 around a closed market when the video game industry thrives on an open one. Microsoft might alienate themselves from the gaming industry kind of like how Apple is.

Valve has been moving towards Linux for a while now. Steam is now on Ubuntu, and with Big Picture mode, it's obvious they have been working on this for a while.
If Microsoft wants to shoot themselves in the foot by separating themselves from the gaming industry, they're more than welcome to IMO. That's a big market that Windows will be shutting off. Honestly, I hope Linux becomes the standard for the PC gaming world, the only reason I have Windows is for games. All the driver issues and compatibility problems I've ever had with hardware in Windows were never an issue running Ubuntu. I like where this is going.

Also, making computer chips smaller actually makes them faster! Nvida's newest 600 series and AMD's 7000 series graphics cards have gone from a 40nm to a 28nm manufacturing process; giving their new series large performance boosts. Intel's newest processors are smaller than before also.

might be interesting if i can plug my mouse and keyboard in and play with a friend using a controller at the same time. granted i will dominate him, but my lack of acceptance of controllers in most games now keeps me separated from my friends in the gaming world.

It has quite a few USB ports so yes you could do that.
On another note, me and my friends have predicted that Valve will launch Half-Life 3 with the Pistin which will also debut the Source Engine 2. There are epic times ahead in the future of gaming!

Difference being, the PS3 is a propietary system developed by sony, locked down to use in the way they see fit. This steam console, whilst possible to also be made locked down, is based on PC architecture. With any luck that'll make all the difference.
