a problem with Puerto Rico
    #1750943 - 07/26/03 05:06 PM (13 years, 5 months ago)

I knew this guy that had four fully colonized puerto rico cakes, and after birthing them, he did not dunk or cold shock, and they started growing mycelium very rapidly and ended up becoming these huge puff balls of mycelium.. The trouble is, after a while the ball started shrinking and the mycelium started to turn tan/light brown, and shortly there after became contaminated with green bread mold.. I thought that a fully colonized cake could fend off infection? The mold was growing right on top of the brown mycelium, so I was wondering if maybe the mycelium was dead?? The terrarium was outside with a temp at night of about 72 degrees, and in daytime around 86. Humidity was very high (outside humidity was about 70 percent) and was created with an ultra sonic humidifier..

please help! what did he do wrong?

soulbts said rh was 70% .
that's much too low for cakes .

Maybe it wasn't mycellium, maybe it was a cobwed mold that contamed the cake since it wasnt fully colonised?

The humidity most likely was way to high, because I meant that the air is 70 percent humidity on its own, plus whatever he bumped it to with the humidifier.. The cakes also were 100% fully colonized when they were birthed.. the only thing is, why did they die? When I broke one in half, it was really dry, could the air be too humid, but the cake not have enough moisture? The super huge fuzzy cakes were probably in the terrarium around 2-3 weeks, so could it be possible that all of the nutrients were used up by the large ammount of mycelium? The other thing I forgot to say is that since they were in the terrarium for so long he wanted to cold shock them, so he just froze a gallon jug and put it in the terrarium.. I dont know if it might have gotten to cold for them though. 3 of the four dead cakes are contaminated, but one of them still has a couple spots where the mycelium is white, and has no contamination. Is there any way you could think of to prevent this area from dying? He is dunking it as I type..

Thanks alot for any help you guys can give!!

You cannot have too much humidity with cakes. My guess would be that your ultrasonic is not providing enough humidity, causing the cakes to dry out. Try supplementing the humidifier with damp perlite. It's foolproof.

ok, I'll deffinately have him try that. I am also wondering if the moisture from the air is actually getting to the cake.. alot of times after running the humidifyer there would be droplets on the mycelium.. it seemed as if the mycelium had formed a protective seal around the cake, preventing actuall water from making it to the substrate..

the Puerto Rican strain has vary aggressive mycelium, and is notorious for being difficult to fruit .
big puffy lumps and airel mycelium is a common trait .
it still sounds to me, that rh is to low .
do you have any condensation on the sides of the terrarium ?
an ultra sonic humidifier may not be enough, if not hooked up properly .try the perlite method .
or, as MrUnorthadox said, casing is probably the best way to go .
good luck .

there is a little condensation on the sides, but not much. I really appreciate all the help, I just wanted to tell you about the last thing.. the entire time that these cakes have reached their peak and died, there have been cakes of equador that were started way earlier fruiting, which by the time the PR cakes died, the EQs were in about their 3rd or 4th flush. I know that the rh doesnt have to be as high for fruiting though. You are probably right about the humidity.. I'm going to have him try the pearlite method or casing next, I havnt decided which, but thanks again!!

ok, he just told me also an important thing.. since there were fruiting EQs, I guess on some of them a green slimey sludge type stuff appeared on some of them, which I understand is a result of to much humidity while fruiting. So he left the lid off for a day which could have dried the PRs and killed them. The EQs however, continue to fruit.

This is very common with PRs. They fruit fine in cakes but take a little longer to get started. They grow that funky growth most of the time but it doesn?t seem to be a problem when I grew them back in the days I was growing.

I bet the puffballs look something like this.

As far as those turnning tan sounds like they got dry.

sounds like the humidifier is running to long which causes to much air exchange which could dry out the cakes try putting it on a timer.
