pasterizing mayhem pllllllllllllz help
    #1750922 - 07/26/03 04:55 PM (14 years, 27 days ago)

ok i have posted awhile back but no real answers. today i just checked my bulks and ewwwwwwwwwwwww foul odor, im guessing bacterial bloom? but anyways the reason is that im doing a large amount in a 22 quart pot not enough room i guess so the botom gets hotter. what im asking here is for more fool proof ways to do this without shoving a filled pillow case into a pot (tightly) and getting hot spots of 200 degrees when the rest is 170. im using mostly poo.ill be trying the lime bath for straw but i need help with poo. this hasn't happened up untill now when i incresed the amount. all ideas and or ways to do this would be great. thank you

First, how is this advanced mushroom cultivation? Pasteurization is pretty basic.

Just put your shit/straw in a pillow bag, bring a pot to a boil... then let it cool to 165F... add half a cup of bleach... then put your pillow bag in there. Put a grate over it so it isn't floating around. Keep this in the window of 165-175F. Don't let it exceed 180F or it may be ruined. Let your pillowcase sit in this bath for 1 hr 15 min, then hang it some place (indoors, over your tub maybe?) to cool for 6 hours. Then squeeze the remaining water out... it is ready to use immediately.

I just did some shit...I put it in a big pot and in the oven for 3 hours on 200f...so far so good...I see signs of growth and no foul smell.....tho it did stink when it was hot and a lil while after it was cool ....I'll let you know how it goes but I'm confident its gonna be fine....btw I wouldn't use the pillow case method for dung myself....you lose a lot of the nutrients in the water...I've used this for straw cause its pretty much all you can do with straw but for dung I wanna keep all the good stuff in there...just my 2 cents

You lose nutrients in the water regardless.

Well, I think he means that any organic material exposed to hot water over a period of time will loose some nutrients to leeching.

Yeah, but leached manure is the recomended substrate anyway. You don't loose anything that you'll miss by water pasteurizing manure. Of course something is washed away, but you won't miss it. Also, depending on the urine content of the manure, and it's age, leeching is highly beneficial.

cool yeah thanks for the help. does anyone pasturize without pillow case and the strain does that work better. do alot of people dump a pot of boiling water in a tub off hot water to up the temp and just soak it without a heat source like a burner. also so many people have different idea of temps i read in the faq 170. ive read teks that say between 170 and 180. and i just read somthing about doin it between 140 170. im just confused how hot is too hott and how long for large amounts sorry if this borders being regular cult. but help would be great.thank again

from what i've read in ggmm and tmc the temp shouldn't be too high because it kills off beneficial bacteria (pastuerization occurs between 140-160 degrees).

well growth seems to have stalled...I'm gonna try leeching next time and I'm adding lime cause I have a feeling its way too acidic

First of all, above 180 is bad. If somebody says otherwise, they just got away with it, doesn't mean you should risk it.

Pasturization occurs in the temp ranges between 140 and 180.

For straw/compost/dung etc, four hours at 140 is fine as is 1 hour at 160 as is 30-45 minutes at 170. The higher the temp, the less time needed.

There are a lot of ways of doing this. Propane burners, turkey friers, 55 gallon drums, large metal "feed" tubs covering all 4 burners on a stove etc.

I found it easiest to use 175*F water from my hotwater heater, then add a small amount of boiling water to compensate for the cooling effect of the straw. Most hotwater heaters have a capacity of 35-50 gallons, they are extremely energy efficient, and are relatively safe. I couldn't think of an easier way.

See my bulk neglect report for more info on hw heater pasturization, but don't poach your kiddies or electrocute yourself!
