The following organizations have lent monetary, grassroots or some other
type of direct support to anti-gun organizations. In many instances, these
organizations lent their name in support of specific campaigns to pass
anti-gun legislation such as the March 1995 HCI "Campaign to Protect Sane
Gun Laws." Many of these organizations were listed as "Campaign Partners,"
for having pledged to fight any efforts to repeal the Brady Act and the
Clinton "assault weapons" ban. All have officially endorsed anti-gun positions.

Not all gun laws are about taking guns away from people. Some of them are about locking people up for unsafe practice that results in death or injury.

If your 8 year old boy takes your gun and shoots some other kid, you should go to jail.

It's a shame these types of laws are needed. People should be responsible enough to lock them up.

it'd be nice if the world was such that people never attacked eachother, and as such, there was no need for defense... but that's not the case.

even if it was, there are still some who hunt to put food on the table, more who carry guns with them into wilderness areas as protection from bears, cougars, etc... and even more who enjoy a little target shooting. there are also collectors and hobbyists.

Even if they weren't needed, they are in some cases, a simple
tool.

Even if they weren't a tool, many are works of art and examples of incredible engineering and assembly skills.

But, even after that, they're fun as hell.

I know, I know. But I think I got my point across... guns are (potentially) dangerous, so avoiding them all together is avoiding (potential) trouble.

I'm sure they can be a whole bunch of fun if you collect them, or make an intelligent and careful use of them. But the fun stops when people get killed or injured...

For example, I don't mind gunis if you, luvdemshrooms, own a few of them because you collect them or whatever. I know you take precautions. I'm pretty sure you don't leave loaded guns lying around in your house.

But I do mind guns when they're in the hands of irresponsible or careless beings...

drugs are (potentially) dangerous, so avoiding them all together is avoiding (potential) trouble.

i can think of many situations in which not having a gun would be much more trouble than having one.

so far in this thread, you've only expressed your desire to avoid weapons and that you'd prefer not to own a gun, and i respect that choice. i would just ask that folks like you would respect the choice of others to buy and own guns if they like.

Crap, driving is 'potentially' dangerous but I do that every day because I *know* how to do it.

This reminds me of when my grandmother told me not to exercise or work out, because when I get to her age I would have sore joints. ??? Don't stay healthy now because of some minor thing that might happen in 10 years? Don't protect myself or use guns as a useful device when hunting because of something that *might* happen? I know that the similarity is vague, but this discussion just made me think of it.

"Even if they weren't a tool, many are works of art and examples of incredible engineering and assembly skills"

well put.

and I don't have any 8 year old kids. and if I did, I would teach them to respect guns like my father taught me. I had my own guns before I was 8, and I never killed anyone... anyway if a kid gets a hold of guns and does something bad, I would say thats a parenting issue rather than a gun control issue.

If a child EVER was in possesion of a gun, the parents need a fucking beating(or jail time if the law gets there first). You may disaggree because you had a gun before you were 8, but I bet you ran around in gumb boots without a shirt on alot too.

jeez it was just a bb gun...

didn't get the real thing till I was 12

but really, my dad knew he was gonna have guns and kids together so he taught me about them from a young age. I would have never thought to point a gun at someone cuz he made it quite clear to me that it wasn't to be done unless that person posed a serious threat to my life. and yes, I understood this at age 6. I understood it because my dad adressed the issue like a mature person instead of hiding his "secret forbidden guns" away from me. If he had done that, I might have been curious and disobeyed, and not knowing anything about guns, I might have done something terrible.

HE wasn't able to tell you about guns without giving you one? I'm sorry but your dads one of the stupidest people I have ever heard of. 6 year old with a gun? I guess your intelligence level may have been on par with his but that clearly doesnt prove much.

6 years old....

it was only a bb gun and he wouldn't let me play with it unsupervised until I had demonstrated the proper responsibility

my dad and I are the same genetics so he knew damn well I was smart enough to handle it. we also had a really close relationship. that probably had a lot to do with it.

all I'm saying is that with proper parenting guns shouldn't be a problem. If you're not willing to invest the time teaching your kids to respect guns, you shouldn't have them in the first place.

sorry thats a hypothetical "you" ^^^^^
