Straw is what is left when they harvest the grain on top of wheat and hay is the crop that is planted.
The only difference between hay and straw is the stage of maturity the plant(wheat) is harvested.

Hay is grains/stalks all mixed together for feeding of livestock, straw is the leftover plant stalks after hay harvest...straw is usually used in livestock bedding, light yellow straw ususally works best, and i read that the reason you dont want hay is it can contain to much alfalfa and lead to contam problems.

believe me, it took me a LONG time to figure that out, had to go to a ranch and ask the ranch hand some question about hay and straw, and the differences between wheat straw and oat straw and blah...blah...blah, its crazy how something so simple a statement as STRAW can turn into a big problem to someone who has no clue about it. Kind of like "aged dung" LOL.

Hay doesnt really have any grain in it, other than what you would call the seeds of a weed that was mixed in with the hay that formed when it was growing on the stalk.

Hay is a blanket term as in a "hay bale" there can be or is Alfalfa, Timothy, Clover.

There are other types of plants you can plant then harvest with these and still be considered Hay.

Only thing is all the other plants inside the hay, are technically called weeds. As in they fight for room, food, moisture in the fields as does the Clover lets say does; though the farmer plants the Clover on purpose to gain the nutrient benefits from it that the weeds lack.

As for storing try cool, DRY place.
