DIY 'mind machines'/trip toys
    #1749898 - 07/26/03 02:08 AM (13 years, 4 months ago)

Has anyone experiemented with DIY 'dream machines' or other cheaply made hallucination inducing equipment?
A list of possible ideas:
~ Two strobes set on alternating frequencies. :nut:
~A 'muscle stimulator' attached to the head.  :oogle:
~John Lilly's idea of placing your forehead against
a mirror and slowly letting your eyes
                                relax. :nut:
I realize the mind is the ultimate trip toy...so I'd like to see us use our creative faculties to invent brain stimulators/relaxors that don't cost three hundred dollars. Any suggestions?

Has anyone heard of a 'Mind Machine' KIT?
I'm thinking of something like the 'Dream Machine' Burroughs (?) or Biron Gyson(sp?) created. I can't force you guys to be creative and/or respond but it sure gets boring creating both sides of the conversation.  so c'mon you slags, think!

Hya!

I like to do what I call "Mirror Walking". I know its nothing special, but I like it.
All You need is a mirror (not too small).

[Something Beautiful] can be anything which is up there - a beautiful ceiling, blue sky with nice white clouds etc.
And The result is that You look to Your feet (like to see where You are walking), but You actually see what is above Your head. Pretty inversing toy.
And You like walk on what is above You. (Sorry Space.)
Very nice in forest indeed...

Peace Out Dude

Yes i have built 2 of them one that hooks to the Computer and a standalone version. While they don't actualy make you trip it is fun.
If you pm me and remind me i will post somemore info and any links and scymatics that i have.

That mirror walking sounds like a good idea! I guess you have to find a really wide open area to walk in first...i would forget i was looking at a mirror probably and walk into a wall.

I wouldn't advise doing the muscle stimulator thing.

The strobes, however, are a good idea.  A strobe at the right rates can induce visionary states -- when you eyes are closed -- all by itself.  If you can get a small strobe that's adjustable from 1 to 15 Hz or so, get it, or get a person you know who can deal with electronics to make one.

holy shit! that was coool, thanks alot for that idea, like i was walking on the ceiling, thought i was gonna walk into the ceiling fan, really plays with your mind, turning the mirror side 2 side while walking made a trippy effect as well.

I have to small adjustable strobes. How would I go about creating a visionary state?
It's only adjustable up to 10Hz though.

A dangerous and interesting mind trip is getting in a car accident. If you hurt yourself bad enough everything in the car crash slows waaaaay down. You see it in sloooooow motion. I dont recommend this.

Put it in front of your face, close your eyes, and sit back.  It kicks in slowly.  It helps if you play soft, white noise over headphones -- or at least that's what I find.

You could probably modify it to blink faster, but that would require getting into the guts of it and attaching another capacitor somewhere.  I don't advise doing this unless you have an idea what you're doing.   But it would be worth it -- IMO, the 5-20 range is the best, especially if you have a dial you can twiddle to adjust it while it's going.

Oh, don't do this if you're prone to seizures.  It could set one off.

I know I'm not prone to seizures. Have been in plenty of strobe-lit places.
Nah I'm not gonna break it open, don't have the knowledge. It is adjustable though.
What will I see (too light to experiment now), some faint CEV's?
Should I just play with the dial while I'm strobing myself?

Yeah, you should play with the dial if you feel that that'd be right at the time.

What I get at first is geometric patterns. After perhaps five or ten minutes, I start getting some pretty realistic (three-d, full-color) CEVs shaping themselves out of the blinking red-and-black background.
