UPDATE 4/3/13
Hey guys,
This is an update to a thread I started a few (3 precisely) months ago. I had requested an ID of some Morels I found growing around campus. I had said they were bursting out of freshly laid asphalt, but I didn't take a pic, and some people wanted to see that.
Well it rained last week, and they came up again (many less this time, but in the same vicinity). Here's the picture proof! These ones were much less "rocky" than the first ones and didn't pick up as much asphalt. I still don't plan on eating them, but perhaps I'll get a culture of them.
-------------------------------------------------------------------- ORIGINAL POST 01/04/13
Howdy guys,
I Found these guys bursting straight out of the freshly laid asphalt of a new construction at my college campus.
Im 99% sure I know what they are, but could I get a positive ID on them?
Im pretty certain they are of the genus Morchella, but I dont know what species.
Found in the East Bay growing out of barren dirt (seemingly nutrientless) which had asphalt laid lightly over them. They didnt grow straight through the asphalt, but rather through the thin layer of asphalt laid on the outside perimeter of the site.
I tasted one, and unfortunately they are a bit offputting because they are covered in dirt/small rocks from the asphalt. Eww... . I noticed some bugs too. Had a good almondy taste, reminescent of very intense Agaricus bisporus flavor. I cooked a tiny specimen in some butter and ate a piece of it and it had a pleasant meaty texture.
No real notable gastrointestinal discomfort.

The locality, off season, habitat and pointy shape suggest Morchella rufobrunnea. Cool find. Supposedly the easiest morel to cultivate.

I really wish I did, but I dont travel about with a camera. I really should start though.
All that is left at the site is their fleshy stumps, I harvested all that I could find (which was not many as you can see).
I tried to dig up the stumps of the mushrooms because, to the best of my knowledge, Morcella fruit bodies grow from sclerotia tissue. I wasnt able to dig down though with my fingers so I didnt find anything reminiscent of sclerotia unfortunately.
Thanks guys!

NICE FIND! super late/early morels?? You can soak them in a dish of salt water to get the buggies out and if you shake them around a bit in there most of the sand will fall out.
you can also dehydrate them and tap the sand off that way

Morchella rufobrunnea is not on a schedule like the other morel species, it fruits whenever it rains.

I just noticed, in the top right most mushroom you can see a couple chunks of fresh black asphalt that are stuck in the crevices of the surface of the mushroom.
Heres a closer look.
I admit, the asphalt pic would have looked pretty cool. Sorry bout that! Next time..

Looks sick dude, it's amazing how resilient mushrooms can be.
Lord of the Gnomes has a picture of a Pisolithus Tinctorius that has grown through and split solid bitumen (that or asphalt, very similar materials). It's pretty amazing to say the least, I won't post it in-case he doesn't want me to but it's on the second page of the South Australia 2013 thread.
