Cool, I should make one too.  I wonder if you could get a stronger band or something and use shorter arrows. I make my own arrows and bows in the back country.  I want to carry everything concealed in a smallish backpack.  From my back door the Mountain and miles of wilderness is 15 minutes away but I have to walk through a section of town and I don't want to scare anyone. I'm pretty scary as it is already the way I dress and my giant pit dog. He's 110lb.

I only wish I was 45 again instead of 60.

There are people online who sell bands made from surgical tubing which store a lot of kenetic energy compared to standard storebought bands. I'm sure you could also buy your own tubing in bulk for relatively cheap. Like Dave said in the video, he cut his band to a shorter length. As far as arrows go, I think you want crossbow bolts. They look almost exactly like an arrow except they're half the size, maybe even shorter.

That's what I want.  I'd be using it for small game only.  Thanks.  One of these days I'll get on it.  I've got a friend in AZ who specializes in just these kinds of projects. I'll see what he thinks.

Just talked to him.  He suggested just shortening the bands on the slingshot.  What do you think?

And what about these guys?

http://www.dankung.com/emart/dankung-slingshots-c-90.html

Palm or pocket sized, bands can last for 2000 shots, beautiful and deadly.  Used with the flip style of shooting. Does anyone have one?  Please comment on it if you do. I think I want to try one.

Those are really sweet! I've never used one, but I hear good things about them because of the way the band is attached as a loop.

I have dabbled with slingshots but maybe now that I'm a little older I could get into one that would actually work out for me?

from my experience they're all shitty and don't fire as far as I'd like, I like the use of a bow more but damn slingshots are fun, they have a rough release though, I would like slingshots if I could think of a way to use a caliper release similar in compund bows because the rlease would be so clean and straightforward it would work out tremendously.

I've got the same one as you, guru, minus the upgraded bands. I just bought it to fuck around with, I don't take it out much.

They make slingshot releases. I saw one somewhere for about $50

What I like about getting good with a slingshot is the challenge. At 60 it's hard to find new outdoor challenges that are within my abilities.  Rock climbing is out. :tongue2:

And for anyone who wants to see just how easy and inexpensive it is to build your own slingshot check this out.

This same site has free templates you can print out if you want to go that route.

I'm working on two right now.

I'm pretty sure they're illegal where I live, but I still have one from a long time ago. They are super survivalist but definitely harder to aim then say a rifle...

They make such an awesome survival tool, I just hate the downside; elastic bands are never found in nature  !I guess that's where underwear bands come in

Slingshots illegal  Do you live in a big city or something? I can't even imagine legislation to take something like that away. It's that kind of thing that kept me and my friends outside as children. Stupid rules like that are what will eventually incapacitate the mass of men due to sedentary and technology-dependent lifestyles

I say let them come and find me  By the time the federal gov could launch an operation like that I would be days and days into the brush... and living large at that.

Hell, that's my plan for any threatening situation; catch me if you can

But I ramble...

Living large in the backcountry with a slingshot for survival with the fed tracking you with satellite cameras and infrared tracking.  Then winter comes.  Oh yeah baby you got em right where you want em.

I took five weeks of desert survival training. The most important thing I learned is that on my own, full time in the brush, I was most likely dead meat.  To really be able to survive that you need many years of intensive experience.  Not just some backcountry camping trips.  But maybe that's just me or maybe you live somewhere where there is no real winter season. In five weeks I learned how much there really is to hard core survival and I learned that I better give myself an edge with the very best modern equipment or there would be no hope for me.

And imo a slingshot is a pretty mediocre survival tool unless you got it set up for shooting as a bow also and you are a very  skilled shot, tracker and stalker.  That's something I'm not even with a lot of years of hunting under my belt.  The 22 would always be my weapon of choice with a slingshot, traps and snares. to fall back on last ditch.  I'd want some spare parts too.

It's definitely not easy. What I do have in my favor is several months worth of supplies already waiting for me in the woods. That would help tremendously.
