Bugs on Dung
    #1749561 - 07/25/03 11:29 PM (14 years, 8 months ago)

When using dung in controlled growing of mushrooms, is it ok if the dung is crawling with bugs? Will that contaminate the mushrooms that will grow? I'm using horse dung and I dont want the bugs to contaminate the shrooms.

They could end up eating everything or contaminating the substrate. You can continue if you wish, i've seen lucky mofos before with this bug stuff. I've never had luck though.

what kind of dung are you using?

i've never seen dung so badly infested with bugs that it might not work... you'll be pasteurizing it, which will kill all the bugs. i don't think that the presence of dead bugs in the substrate would be a big deal, but it could be a vector for post-pasteurizing contamination by mold or bacteria.

Thanks mushmaster for bringing that up. I thought Mc shroom was asking about already spawn substrate.
If it's before pasteurization procedure you shouldn't have problems.
