I'd say the hackle is tied standard around the shank then bunched up and secured with dubbed x-wraps. I'm guessing, never saw that style hackle before, but I like it..

St Croix has sent me like three top halves of rods that I shut in car doors...100% for free. Orvis always made me pay prob unless its manufacture defect. What kinda rods you guys working with? For trout my go to is a 6'6" 3wt llbean pocket water (painted to look like bamboo!)with a stream light ultra reel. Its a fucking sweet rig let me tell you. Especially since most streams around here you could jump across so a 6'6 if just perfect. Although I've hooked some fish that I've felt under equipped to handle with a 3wt. But thats my game I'm an ULTRA ultra light type of fisherman lol.

My set up for steelhead consists of a Buelah platinum switch rod 7wt. 10'8" matched with a Ross CSA reel and Rio short skagit shooting head. For trout, a Redington 5wt. 8'6" match with a Redington reel and orvis 5wf floating something fancy line. Just enough to punch #6 weighted rubberlegs into the wind on alpine lakes between gusts. Not a bad little set-up, I carried it on the plane to Mexico a couple of summer ago and caught a 3 ft. barracuda on it off the rocks in PV..

Barracuda on the fly! What kinda fly? Did it survive(the fly)? last year I caught the biggest barracuda of my life trolling off shore for king mackerel. I didn't even measure it but it was def the biggest she fell back before we could measure it cuz it wasn't really even hooked but like hanging on by its tooth lol.

It was a fun catch, Pacific barracuda are kinda long and rather slender compared to their Atlantic cousins. Toothy and feisty non the less. I was throwing a small red & white tarpon style streamer, it's laying around somewhere, still. The tips of the tail feathers missing.

I also could not imagine breaking
a high end rod...I am hoping I never know that feeling..

back in the day I spent a winter and a lot of scarce cash building the perfect fly rod.  I then for the first use hitch hiked out to Yellowstone from Seattle.  On my last ride into Boseman where I would meet my friend I caught a motor cycle.  I had my back pack on and the rod in a rod case.  The rod case nicked the back wheel going about 50mph, broke it open and the rod hit the pavement and shattered. I never got to use it and had to use a really crap extra rod my friend had luckily brought along.

This one is tied on a shank with a trailer hook set up. I do have a few tied on log shank# 4-6 heavy wire nymph hooks with smaller egg beads. It take a certain bead with a larger hole to fit the hook. the smaller one are also productive. This pattern real comes freakishly alive in the water.

Thanks guys..

coming season...anyone else stocking up the boxes these days?

Yeah i usually dont go for many winter trips as the rivers i like are a bit of a drive and i find winter to be very hit or miss. Some days theyre not hungry at all. But somedays wake up make the drive to the river to find the most popular stretch to be empty. Not another fisherman in sight or even for miles. You crunch you way to the snow covered bank and take a deep breath of crisp cold air. You observe the fog swirling just above the current. Stepping over the ice you stick your feet in an think not too cold today. Maybe after several casts your clearing ice from ur guides n notice the sun has hit the river. Then something magical. A winter caddis hatch. Suddenly every cast results in a fish. N always seem to hook the biggest fish on a size like 23 midge or winter caddis

A friend of mine got into a 31" steelhead swinging a half size intruder fly a few weeks ago...saw
some pictures today...she was a beauty. I am thinking of getting out to a few places that allow
winter fishing for steelhead and trout before spring...I am having a hard time not fishing this
winter lol.

We got nail by a pineapple express in December, stormy & windy as hell for weeks. The rivers here are finally shaping up and I've gotten out for a few casts, at least, for the last coupla days. It should look pretty good for the weekend. There's something special about standing in thigh-deep freezing cold flowing water, chuckin' feathers. Its kinda cleansing and I attribute most of my sanity to it..

Yes, I will take your warning now as a jinx, Chief. I tripped on a rock and took a minor dunk this morning exiting the river crossing. Its all good tho, I caught the first steelhead of the morning. Before being ran off by the rain. A nice 12# class bright, fresh native buck with big shoulders. He made a long run all the way into my backing then turned around and ran right back under my feet. Line went slick and I thought for a sec that he came off the hook, only to make another run just as long. A little disappointed I didn't get a photo op with it, I'll post a shoot of the fly he bit..
