"This statement is false" True or false?
    #1745767 - 07/24/03 07:16 PM (20 years, 8 months ago)

To put it more clearly.

"The statement I am now writing is false."

True or false?

That's not really philosophy, and there aren't many comments to be made... it's impossible to answer, end of story!

Reminds me of a story I read in the Taoist Handbook.

It went somethign along the lines of:

There was a kind who decided he wanted his kingdom holy, so he had passed a law to execute any man who dares lie.

So some dood went to the king and made the statement "You will kill me for lying."

Obviously, if the king did not kill him, this statement would be a Lie.
If the king did kill him, it would have been the truth.

So the king renounced his throne, and went with the man to the mountains to live with the dood and find The Way.

It was something like that, but im pretty sure his name was 'dood'

Not really philosophy?

I tend toward the solution which claims that if a statement is found unfalsiable (i.e. bearing the possibility of being found either true or false), then it is meaningless; it's gibberish. Only statements that can be assigned one truth-value can have meaning.

I dont understand why you think its impossible to answer. So I will provide another awnser.

It would have to be true to be false. If it is false it makes the statement true.

If it is true that this statement is false then the statement is true.
If the statement is false the statement must be true since it can only be true or false.

I say it is both.
Or Neither.

If you think it is impossible to answer. At least provide an answer to why it is impossible to answer.

OtoxicO: "we dont know if the statement u are writing is really false"

The "statement" is obviously refering to itself. I made this quite clear when I wrote "I am now writing"

It's neither true nor false. It's an abstract self-referential paradox; the concept of 'truth' cannot apply to it.

It's vaguely similar to circular logic; it doesn't matter what is contained, because it has no bearing or relation to reality. This is also why it's not philosophical; you can't make any deductions about Truth (as such) from the paradoxical nature of the statement, because the statement has no applicability beyond itself.

How much wood would a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood.

Hmmmm...

This is indeed a logic paradox from classical philosophy. Here are some references.

The statement is neither tautological or dependent on the truth values of external references, since the only thing it refers to is itself. So one could say that it isn't a well-formed statement about reality, in which case it is meaningless to assign a truth-value to it.

Another alternative is to simply define it to be either true or false, by arbitrary choice. However, with this approach you also need to change the rules of logic deduction to avoid inconsistencies, and that's not really worth the effort.
