SGFC QUESTION
#17470618 - 12/30/12 11:45 AM (11 years, 2 months ago) |
|

I've been reading bout SGFC's in closets lately because I was planning on putting the SGFC in my closet.
So far I concluded that SGFC + closet = bad
So my Question is... If the ideal spot is to put the SGFC in an open area and the ideal light schedule is 12/12.. Where are you supposed to put your SGFC when its out in the open in your room and needs 12 hours of darkness??

You could properly construct a good set up in a closet. As long as you have a stand to raise the FC of the ground at least 12", and you fan and mist as needed to maintain 95%+ humidity you should be fine. You would need to install 6500k lights above the FC of course but other than that it would be pretty simple. You might even want to consider using a small computer fan to keep the air flowing because a closet is a pretty small space and you do want adequate FAE but that probably isnt even necessary, just keep the door open and fan regularly.

I was thinkin of stickin the SGFC in my closet for 12 hours of dark but im worried bout lack of FAE.

Mines in the closet with the door open anytime I'm home. I mist/fan 3-4 times a day and it's doing just fine, not even fuzzy feet. I have it raised probably 40" off the ground and its sitting on some wide mouth 1/2 pints.

thx for the reply bro!
Another Question...
Lets say you leave your FC in your room for the day to receive indirect sunlight. But than once the sun goes down, and you turn on your home lights....do you have to put the FC in a dark room or can it just stay in place throughout the day?

I don't think a few hours of excess light will make or break a grow. 12/12 is ideal but I'm sure other options work.

I think im just going to leave my closet open during the day(for FAE)... when the dark period comes.. ill just close my closet half way(for FAE) and hide the FC from the light (for darkness) behind the closed part of the closet door
The SGFC will be supported by a stand(probably a foot and a half from the ground) and i will use a 6500k light during the day + the indirect sunlight i get in my room
is that a good idea??

You just need to make sure your FC is able to get air to travel under it as well that is why mine is also elevated on glass jars.
As far as the light, 6500k or direct sunlight for a few minutes a day with indirect the rest of the day are ideal. I'm guessing that the other lights in your house are no where near 6500k so they won't have a huge impact on the crops. I think if they get 6-8 hours of dark they'll grow just fine.

my indoor lights are all red spectrum.. only light thats 6500k(blue) is the light im gonna use for the FC.
I have a plastic grid storage crate as a stand so i now there will be equal FAE on all side including the bottom.
i was just mainly planning on using indirect sunlight + (1) 6500k bulb for FC light.. I could add direct sunlight for a few mins to the schedule everyday but is it worth it?
ANYONE think that hiding the FC behind the closed part of a halfway open closet(for dark period) will work?

nah the 6500k light will provide the light necessary. As for the rest I would just leave it without messing with the door too much.

All my indoor lights are 5500k and my grow light is the only 6500k.

IMO as long as the FC receives an ample dark period you should be ok. I've birthed well over 1000 cakes in many settings. They WANT to grow by nature. GL Allllll love

Here's my take on it. Im still relatively new, but catch on fast.
You are just creating a microclimate inside a chamber. If you can monitor the inside of the chamber with a humidity meter, and make sure you are getting enough fae, and have a proper light schedule, youll be fine.
Even RR says you cant have too much fae. Just make sure to keep and eye on your humidity.
All other variables are just static.

I agree with these guys, the sgfc provides a reasonably adequate micro-environment that is hard even for noobs like me to mess up too terribly. I'm on my first grow and I keep mine in a closet. I certainly don't fan enough but I do try, and I fan out the closet itself or leave it open when I can, as I see others also do. Heck, it's even a poorly constructed sgfc, not enough holes and the holes are too small. Yet, despite all of this, I'm getting better results than I expected, if not as much as could be hoped. So there's my two cents. And here's pics for some perspective.
Hopefully that helps a little. At the end of the day I would have to say that a larger room would surely be preferable, but I closet can be made to work.

Mine is in a closet and I'm having great fruits. As long as you have 12/12 light schedule with a 6500k light you're laughing.
Oh yeah, and mist n fan!

SillyStrings where are these holes you speak off lol.
I'm starting to think OP has bacterial contams if SillyStrings can get some growth with that poorly constructed sgfc that or OP isn't keeping humidity where it needs to be.

Haha, they're mostly at the top and just above the level of the perlite for CO2, and on the bottom for facilitating evaporation. Only a few holes up the sides of it, need a lot more. It's pretty fail all in all, but I needed something quick, or I thought I did. I've had it in action for about a week now, and I can already see that I need to get in there and burn some more holes in that bad boy, and bigger too.
There's the some holes, like I said, needs a lot more but it's not killing them at least

Those are Kerr wide mouth half pints, that particular rye cake crumbled, so I left it piled in the lid and have kept my fingers crossed regarding rust.

My closet is kept closed. I open it whenever I go in to mist and fan. This should be more than enough to get some fresh air into the area.
