Microscopic bacteria

Playing with my new microscope today.
Got a bacterial infection in this petri dish;

I decided to record what I saw so I could share.
Had to make a youtube account and post my first youtube video, so I could post it here(what a hassle).
I need to clean my 40X objective and this microscope doesn't have a fine adjustment, only coarse It is only a 3 mega-pixel camera, too.

You sealed the deal this is nuts! I have been wanting to buy a micro scope. This is only 40x I thought bacteria was much smaller. Any recommendations on a microscope I should buy. Thanks for sharing man.

This is a 40X objective X whatever the camera magnification is, probably the 400X range.
This is a $120 model Amscope, it is a 800X with a 3 point something mega-pixel camera.
Which was my price range at the time.
I would suggest a 1200X with a better camera, check the website,
http://www.amscope.com/
Did a bunch of shopping before I bought, these are all metal construction and reasonably priced

Just a few tips from an amateur. Make sure your cover slips are pressed down tight. It will help eliminate the movement (won't look like a river of stuff moving through the field of view). Here are a couple of shots of bacteria....one at 100X and one at 1000X.

You can make a ghetto slide with clear tape over the sample rather than a cover slip. In fact, you can touch the sticky side of tape to mycelium and then place it on a slide for viewing. RR

You should get some Gram's Stain, you can begin to differentiate bacteria with it. It is messy as hell but cool to look at once the staining is done.
Some of the movement you are seeing is called Brownian Motion (the non-river stuff). Movement of bacteria is also caused by flagella. Microbiology is the shit, I can stare at a slide for hours if there is something interesting.

Would not it be more correct to say "the shit is Microbiology" ;-)
Nice pictures guys, I am also searching for a microscope to myself. I just want a "cheap" one that plugs into the USB.

Well the constituents of shit are observed through microbiology. I can tell you from experience that it is no bueno working with feces. It is crazy what is in your poop.
