OK 1 More quick question before I get started!
    #1746628 - 07/25/03 12:13 AM (20 years, 8 months ago)

Instead of boiling the glass jars for sterilization caN i just nuke them? They are 1/2 pinters I am going verm/brf 60/40 with 1/4 cup water into the mix. If I do nuke them do I cover the holes with tape or cover the whole thing in tin foil. I need help asap I plan on doing this in 30 minutes =]

Boil them. Nuking them will probably not work very well. Boiling is easier.

but I dont have a vegtible steamer tray or whatever for my big pot so the glass will be touching the bottom of the pot :[ is there anything around the house I can use instead of that tray I dont have? Also 1 more question: I got the Kerr can with the 2 part lids. When I steam sterilize them should I unscrew the lid a little bit and will the other part of the lid rise up with pressure increase inside of the jar or do I have to space it from the jar with some tape or somthing? Also my other question: Do I cover the holes with tape or cover the whole thing in tin foil. Thanks so much guys =D

Put a towel on the bottom of the pot.
Seal side up, tape holes and just snug the lids.
Put the foal on. You will be fine.
It is not as hard as what it is made out to be. You are doing brf cakes ? If so you will be ok

There is no need for the towel if you make sure that there is enough water, your choice though.

I like the towel just to make sure, I even put it in the pc on top of the rack. Better to be safe than waste an hour.

I think I should be fine without the towel I guess... I will just put enough water in the pot. Do I really have to wait a full hour? Or will 1/2 hour be fine? BTW thx for all the help =]

Also when you say seal side up.. Does that mean just like I bought the jars? With the metal side up and the plastic side facing down towards the substrate or teh other way around?

there is a small red rubber band around the rim of the lid , put this side up.
When you look at the lid there should be a red band on a white lid this side goes up. So when you put the band on the jar you should see a white top.
Got it.?

god im so fucking confused lol btw im using the Kerr jars... My red band is on the underside of the lid when I bought it, and the top of the lid says "Kerr". Am i supposed to now flip that and have the Kerr facing down towards the substrate? Does this even matter? Lol thanks =D

tape it and put some tinfoil on top of that and if the jagged edges still poke through slap some more tinfoil on it.the red rubber band up is the right way, although i've done batchs that have turned out fine w/ the rubber ring down. and as said above, metal lids and micowaves is not a good combo

man i wouldnt even bother with steam sterlization!!
get a pressure cooker!!! they only cost like 50$
they are probably the most important piece of equipment u can buy!

but if u absolutely MUST use steam sterlization, then definatly do it for the full hour or whatever... when i pressure cook, i cook for 90min.... so i hope for your sake 1hr is enuff :/

If you have metal poking up then just get a hammer and flatten it out. Problem solved.

I've always used my lids rubber seal down. I've not had any problems getting enough air flow when its time to loosen the lids.

But anyway, hurry up and get a few PF TEK grows under your belt and move on to grain. Once you understand the growth cycle of the mushies better there is no better way than grain spawned to poo/straw in my opinion.

Good Luck!!! :mushroom2:

Dude check it out this is how I did my 12 jars and they colonized just fine with no contams. I got a power drill and with the lids on the jars drilled 4 holes in each jar. Fill the jars up with ur brf verm mixture, leave a half inch open on the top and put dry verm on top till the jar is full. Put the lids on and screw the band till its tight. No need to put a towel on the bottom of the pot. Wrap foil over the tops of the jar so no extra water gets into your jars. Then stack um up in your pot add about 1/3 of the height of the bottom jars in water. Put it on high until it boils then bring it down to low with the lid on for an hour and a half. Wait for them to cool completly and innoculate. It's that easy.
