SNOW CAMPING
    #17280666 - 11/25/12 06:04 PM (12 years, 1 month ago)

I'm going this year for the first time.
Looking for tips, tricks, & tales of horror.

We'll be constructing a man cave with a small central fire.

pads to sit/sleep on.  Also something to insulate your food like foam around the bowl.  Food gets cold too quick in the elements and the last thing I want is to be eating cold spaghetti or what ever at the end of the day. I also put socks around my water bottles to help slow down the freezing.  Bring lots of sweets like chocolate or hard candies.  Sweets help keep the cold chill out a bit at night.  Besides lots of layers and food I'd also bring extra pairs of gloves and hats and socks. I also bring some large and small plastic bags for what ever I may need them for. Say my boots are leaking I can put the bag over my socks.  Or I can lay them under my sleeping pad for extra protection.  Bring at least a few days worth of extra food.  Also ski poles help with walking.

Awesome man. Thanks for taking the time to respond.
I'm planning on making hot soup inside the mancave and filling thermos up with it ect.
Aso gonna pick a mild day where its not below zero. Should be a blast!

I always boil some water and pour it in a thick plastic bottle and throw it in my bag before I get in. I dont sleep in a cave, I use a bivy with a sleeping bag, so not sure how cold it will be in the little cave.

A challenge! What is the lowest temperature you have endured recreationally?

Well it gets to -30 easily but I'm looking to avoid such temps!  Shooting for +20.
I love nature so much tho. It's worth battling it just to trip outside & look at the sky.

I cant imagine tending the campfire enjoyable at -30. My experiences in the low 30's were formidable, though it was raining which made it more daunting. How are you equipped?

Pretty well. It was fall camping, where we made an elaborate "mancave" with a tiny fire inside , that inspired the idea. Tarps, rope, pine limbs & blankets. I'll probably bring a sled full of split kindling. Maple.

If you can't find a cave to sleep in try this:

Build a short lean-to and attach a emergency blanket to the under side of the roof and drape a sheet of clear plastic over and down the front, pinning it tightly along the top and at the ground and along 1 end of the opening, leaving one side loose to get into . Then build a long fire in front of the lean-to ( 3 to 5 feet away) the entire length of the front of the lean-to in a shallow trench with some rocks on the far side of the fire to act as a reflector. The fire doesn't need to be a rip roaring fire. You can also put a tarp over the roof of the lean-to for added protection from the elements and more insulation. Use pine boughs as bedding material to insulate yourself from the ground, placing your bag on top. The emergency blanket will reflect the heat from the fire down onto you and the clear plastic acts like a mini green house.

I've used this method in sub zero temps before and slept as good as I do indoors. If built right the temps inside the lean-to will be around 70 degrees f. or so depending on the out side temps.

Maybe not totally relevant, but in the movies you used to see homeless people depicted using newspapers as blankets. Actually an effective method of heat conservation is to bundle the paper up and stuff it inside your cloths.

I have been getting geared up for winter camping as well, I just need some snow shoes and a shovel and I'm ready to go.. The hardest part has been convincing someone to come with me!
