i have lime already but the bag is long gone so i dont know how high the acidity is. is there a way to test it and what is the amount of acidity i want. alsoi know joshua can find oyster shell flour. but i cant any way that i can powderize oyster shell to add to casing. i like the idea of powder verses chunk. any help would be great
p.s. should i just buy new lime?

I doubt you need to buy new lime. Lime is basic, not acidic, but it should be fine (it's a powder,) and it should be pretty sterile (I don't know how many things could live in lime. I would assume not many.)

If you wish to achieve optimal results when adjusting pH, it is highly advisable to use litmus strips (with color chart), or acquire a pH test probe (available at most garden supply stores, under $20) to accurately test, and adjust the pH of your casing mix, prior to application

Lime is a base, not an acid. Since it's a stable and inorganic chemical, unless it's been contaminated by a lot of stuff, it's gonna be the same as you bought it. It doesn't go bad, though it might fuse into a solid block.

I believe the Dolomitic (sp?) lime will kill the myc because it contains magnesium. Of course this is the exact thing I bought 40 lbs of last week like an idiot. Doh!

Dolomitic lime doesn't kill the mycelium. The magnesium supposedly inhibits fruiting, but I've used high-mag lime for cubensis without a problem. Maybe in other species....

I bought some pickling lime at Wal Mart next to were the jars are. I can use this right? Isn't it just hydrated lime?

exactly...
no matter how you do it, the end goal is to spike the pH to give the spawn the upper hand in the first days of the run.
