A little help please *pics*
    #1745187 - 07/24/03 05:50 PM (14 years, 26 days ago)

I found these in a park growing under birtch trees.
I am having trouble ID'ing them online (will purchase a key later on tonight). I know they are not active wondering they are are edible and species, if you would be so kind.

They are approx. 2.5 tall. Cap is approx. 2" Gills are brown w/ a brown spore print. Stems are not hollow, but rather thick and very meaty with a diameter of approx. .5"

Thank you for your time.

-PD

Appears to be a couple beat up specimens of some kind of Agaricus, as to which species, I have no idea. Its a hard genus to pinpoint species. A detailed description is important and some better pics would help too.

Those are from the genus Agaricus.

To identify them to species we need to know a few more things. Cut one in half vertically, scrape the inside with your knife edge to bruise it, and watch for color changes. The changes can take up to an hour. We also need to know what they smell like. Try near where the stem joins to the cap and the base of the stem. If you can't smell much of anything, try crushing the base of the stem with your fingers.

Let us know.

Happy mushrooming!

They appear to have some yellowish bruising on the stem. Of course it may be a pigment of my imagination
Maybe Agaricus xanthodermus, or one of the other yellow bruising Agaricus's. Some of these are good edibles and some are poisonous. The smell will surely help narrow down the ID.

Thank you for the help. They bruise a light shade of yellow, and the smell is very organic, like moss and soil mixed together.

If they bruise yellow and you're not detecting an odor, then they probably belong to Section Xanthodermati. That's where almost all the poisonous species of Agaricus are.

Given the photos, those are probably Agaricus xanthodermus (if not, then one of the species close to it), and they are poisonous. They cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and headaches.

Happy mushrooming!
