Silence of the grave

Silence of the grave

Saddam's two slain sons can tell no tales

Leader
Thursday July 24, 2003
The Guardian

As Jack Straw says, it would have been preferable had Uday and Qusay Hussein not been killed. Many may feel that Saddam's odious sons richly deserved their fate at the hands of US special forces in Mosul. But had they been taken alive, they might in time have provided invaluable information about Iraq's arms programmes, the whereabouts of any extant weapons of mass destruction, the former regime's view of al-Qaida or, for example, Saddam's past dealings with US governments. They might even have revealed their father's whereabouts.

A public trial in which the two men were called to account for their crimes might have proved a cathartic moment for the Iraqi nation, demonstrating that war can bring justice. None of this is now possible. It is unclear how hard US forces tried to obtain a peaceful surrender. Little thought seems to have been given to mounting a siege or subduing the men by non-lethal means after they initially opened fire. It is disappointing that the many sensitive questions upon which the two men might have shed light remain unanswered as a result.

OK, you can volunteer to sneak in and zap Saddam with a taser when they locate him. Maybe you should bring a butterfly-net.

Armchair quarterbacks are a dime a dozen.

Here's the deal - take 5 out of shape new york cops who deal with seige situations every day and give them 30 million to get Uday out alive.

You'd better start writing the cheque now cos I can assure come hell or high water they'd bring Uday out alive.

Bullshit. You can assure nothing. Why did you start a new thread about the same topic?

They were already in the front door going up the stairs when the Hussein boys started shooting at them. Maybe they could have thrown the key at them.

That would only work if the key was made of depleted uranium.

Not sure how much military experience you have shak but it's absolutely no fucking use trying to "sneak" in once you've shouted at someone through a megaphone and fired 15 missiles at them...Ok? Take it from me - that ain't gonna work.

You don't roll up at 10am shouting through megaphones and then try "sneaking" in. We're not in a Bill and Ted movie now y'know.

This may sound amazing to you but how about using the key to go in through the back door in the early hours of the morning? That sound sensible? When you're trying to capture what are probably the two most important sources of intelligence on earth right now? Think before you answer..

They were not sneaking anywhere. They were going up the stairs. This was before they had shot any missiles anywhere. God damn, why don't you read the fucking reports before you spout of more shit that doesn't make any sense. You keep digging yourself deeper and deeper in this argument.

You didn't think did you  :smirk:

No it was after they'd killed Uday and the other guy with the missiles that they went up the stairs and were fired at by the 14 year old.

Wrong again Alpo, unless your secret sources have told you something the press doesn't know.

"The owner of the house, Sheik Nawaf al-Zaydan Muhhamad, walked out with his son Shalan, their hands on their heads, and were whisked away by troops, neighbors said Wednesday.

The other occupants were less cooperative. So after 10 minutes troops tried to enter the building. From the fortified middle floor of the three-floor building came Kalashnikov fire, raking the troops and wounding four of them. The Americans fell back to regroup and reinforcements were summoned."

Actually that was the second or third trip up the stairs idiot. The first one was when they entered the house to begin with. Three guys got shot and they pulled back. They shot up the place for a while and tried again. The soldiers got shot at again, so they brought in the TOW guys to wipe them out. Then they went up the stairs AGAIN, and got shot at by the 14 year old.

I like the way you changed your last post there once you were proven wrong. Anyway, here is the first trip up the stairs.

Quote:

On the initial exchange of gunfire, we had three coalition soldiers wounded on the stairs as we attempted to get up to the second floor, and we had one coalition soldier that was wounded outside of the building. At this point, our forces withdrew.

I think even saddam's sons would be cautious enough to know if US troops were entering the house they controlled. It not hard to notice suspicous activity and then shoot at anything that moves. Sure if you only watch cops it will seem as though every time they try a sneak attack it will work. In the real world everything that can go wrong will go wrong. Im sure the first thing in the american soldiers minds were "Hell sneak in, were to good for that, lets blow them to pieces beacuse who gives a shit" You dont think they tried to do their best? War is hell and nothing goes as planned.

And Alex about those New york city cops you talked about being able to capture the sons. If they actually tried something as preposterous as that you would just blame the bush admistration for being dumb fucks. Nothing in that situation could have been an end all solution solution.

So you've never heard of a seige situation being resolved other than by calling in helicopters and missile launchers?

Where do you live? I hear about it all the time.

I like the way you changed your last post there once you were proven wrong.

It was more to do with when I realised you were dodging the point and desperately trying to change the subject.

Anyway, here is the first trip up the stairs.

What has this got to do with the point? Once you've decided to storm the building it's harder to sneak in and capture them alive. Can you grasp this concept or not?
