Rye or WBS, what does everyone prefer?
    #1733448 - 07/20/03 10:01 PM (20 years, 8 months ago)

I'm thinking Rye is a lot more consistant, I like what i'm seeing with it. I never really used it before, always WBS. I may be sticking to the rye berries from now on though.

I also prefer other grains (wheat, oat) to WBS, but I use it mostly for spawning other substrates. Maybe WBS has some advantages if you're fruiting directly from it.

Yeah, everyone seems to say that WBS colonizes faster. But shit, Rye seems a lot easier to get the water content right and much less of a pain in the ass.

I consider rye and wheat (hard red winter) to be nearly identical in performance. I used them when I was working with something I needed absolute control over, because I never had much luck doing anything other than very accurately formulating water content.

If I was doing any regular cultivation, wbs couldn't be beat for price and ease of preparation, especially in bulk. It performed equally well to rye and wheat, assuming I wasn't working with a quirky or finicky situation, or doing an experiment which required the utmost in control. As in, if I needed to know that 2 experiments had the exact same moisture percentage to be comparable, I used rye or wheat.

If I just wanted to grow some fruits to eat, WBS any day of the week. You can do 10 times as much WBS, 10 times easier, for a 1/10 of the cost of any other grain.

PM me with any cultivation questions.

I just looked at my profile and realized I had a website at one point in time on geocities, it's not there anymore and I have no idea what I had on it. Anybody remember my website from several years aga? PM if so please.

Hard red wheat berries are the thing to use IMO.

Rye is definatly harder to find and more expensive, but so much easier to get uniform water content. I don't have to worry about jars getting bacteria or growing slow because of off water content.

Penningtons seed was working great for me for so long, then they stopped making it and every other brand I used just had no consistancy, it seemed as if every other jar had differnt needs for water ratios. It sucked. So now i'm just gonna stick with Rye, fuck it, it's not that expensive and I can find it at the local grocery store,

I'm partial to rye. It's uniform and predictable regardless of the source (almost), and once you learn its nuances, it will consistently perform well. It is a little harder to get than bird seed, though.

Rye. It's consitent if nothing else. And you can eat it.
It's cheap where the turtle gets it. 55lbs for $8 u.s.
In canada, 25kg for $11.50. Very cheap. 10 cents a quart.
