Sediment in LC jars after PC
    #5507794 - 04/12/06 11:43 AM (17 years, 10 months ago)

Is it normal to have a lot of sediment in LC jars after PCing?
The solution is light barley malt / Corn syrup PC?d 20min @15 psi.
It was pre-mixed with boiled water and filtered through 2 coffee filters.

Its normal to have some, depends what you mean by a lot. I've seen that myc tends to like to anchor on to the sediment when it first starts, so you'll end up with that gunk trapped inside your puff balls of myc, doesn't hurt anything, might make you a little confused when looking out for contams later but not a big deal usually.

I've read that it won't hurt anything. I myself just knocked up a LC jar yesterday that had quite a bit of sediment. We'll see how it goes.

Ah barley malt is a real culprit for sediment. Don't worry, as long as you've not over PC'ed an caramelised it (which is hard to tell with barley malt it looks the same) the myc will really eat up the sediment. peace.

I usually discard freshly PD'd honey LC that exhibits sediment as often this coincides with caramelization? according to my taste buds anyway. My observation has been jars with more sediment germinate slower when inoculating directly with spores however when transferring mycelium this is less of a problem.
You might want to consider a lower pressure/temperature.
My routine involves bringing the jars to 12 or 13 pounds over the course of five to ten minutes. Once temp has reached around 245 degress I turn off the heat source and allow pressure and temperature to fall naturally. Not one of my jars has ever become contaminated using this method. Come to think of it? I have never had an LC contaminate regardless of the procedure? pretty tough stuff. The main concern is caramelizing the nutrients which I have had problems with in the past.
