Good Microscopes?
    #17431371 - 12/22/12 08:35 AM (11 years, 4 months ago)

Does anyone know of any good microscopes for mycology? I'm interested in buying one, but I don't want to spend too much money.

I'd be looking in the price range of $100-200.

I would look for something used made by a good quality optics company.  Zeiss, Leitz etc..  Once in a while on eBay you can find a good deal.
There is a Canadian member here that sells refurbished microscopes.  Great guy to work with.  I am not sure if he has something in that price range or not but it would be worth asking.
PM me if you would like and I can get you the information.

It depends on what you want to use the microscope for. I can't really suggest a microscope without knowing what you want to use it for.

To observe things like spores you will need a compound microscope, preferably with a 100X objective to give you enough magnification. AmScope make good entry level microscopes in your price range.

I recommend a binocular scope with a 100x objective and a reticle.  Generally the cheapest scope that has these things is the Amscope B-100ms.  I have used that scope and was happy with it.

If you want to spend a little more get a trinocular scope with a DSLR adapter and sit your DSLR camera on top of the thing.  That way you can take pics of what is going on without removing an eyepiece, or project the image onto a larger screen via a HDMI cable (good for teaching classes / demos).

More expensive scopes have better optical quality, but I don't recommend those for a first scope because a lot of people let their scopes collect dust, and it's best to make all the noob mistakes with a cheaper scope.

Awesome, thanks for all that information!:sunny: I don't have the money to purchase one at the moment but I plan to in the near future. Looks like I have a lot of research to do on microscopes. I am very interested in using it for mushroom/spore identification just to be sure and thorough. But I would also use it for various other reasons as well. I can picture myself looking at a sample of everything I have in the house through a microscope haha.
