If your Kazaa username is listed here, your screwed

Quote:

The recording industry has launched a sweeping effort to identify and shut down individual song swappers, making good on recent threats to expand its legal battle against copyright theft.

The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) has now issued more than 911 subpoenas to Internet service providers across the United States, trying to get the names of people still offering music on file-sharing networks such as KaZaA and Grokster.

Today, "Tech Live" brings you the RIAA Hit List, the user names of file traders targeted in the recording industry subpoenas.

Last month, we brought you the story of Jesse Jordan, a 19-year-old college student who became one of the first to be hit with a lawsuit by the RIAA. Jordan settled his case by paying $12,000 to the RIAA.

The following user names were culled from subpoenas filed with the US District Court in Washington, DC. All subpoenas, incidentally, are being served by the Los Angeles law firm of Mitchell Silberberg & Knupp. A total of 253 RIAA subpoenas were listed as of July 22 through the federal court system's paid online database, PACER. The actual subpoenas are available to view online in about half the cases.

The court documents don't show individual users' real names. They do show file-sharing network user names, the user's ISP, the user's IP address, and a sampling of copyright songs the user allegedly made available for download. To date, many ISPs have been contacted, including Pac Bell Internet, SBC, Charter Communications, Comcast, Adelphia, RCN, and Time Warner.

Following is a list of the first user names from our review of the subpoenas.

Too bad for the RIAA, there are at least a million more Kazaa users they forgot to put on that list.

Uh, this is not cool at all.... Here we go again with some form of goverment making criminals out of otherwise harmless good citizens.... When will this end? God damn the RIAA.

My opinion is that file sharing is GOOD. There are alot of bands that i would have never heard, or considered to buy a CD. But thanks to file sharing i have been exposed to a wonderfull pallet of music, and i am now considering to purchase these cds. I would have never considered to purchase the CD otherwise. Damn evil greedy americans. If they can use the system to make money, theyll do it. They could give a rats ass about helping the artists. Most of the artists could care less. Its the record labels, not the artists. Unless your talking about lars ulrich, hes just a bitch pussy.

I agree it's unfortunate that record labels own the music rather than the artists. But even if the artists did own the music, the music would belong to them, and it would be up to them to decide if they want to allow their music to be shared or not. I'm not saying there's no good things to file sharing, but most people keep more music than they pay for, and that's not fair to the artists who created and own the music.

In any case, I do think the penalties for sharing are WAY too strong, but it's probably the only way to get millions of people from stopping it.

Music should be free anyway in our mp3, computer society. If an artist wants money they should perform, but listening to the stuff is really free advertising for them.

Only to those who are incapable of creating.

Those who can deserve to reap the benefits of their talent.

I can be worth lots! If people hear the band when they never would have before, then request it on radio.....the band could get lots of contracts. And they would be givin credit as the musicians.....

Its stupid to pay $16 bucks for sound...unless its one of my favorites, that i like every song on the cd. Most only have a couple.

i fail to see your point. So for an artist to communicate his perception- there must be money involved? Money = worth ?
If we consider spreading music as advertisement ( re azmodeus ), then there is huge value in it. Your suggestion amounts to advertisement being worthless.

The music industry is pushing it's musical tastes on the masses, and kazaa is a very very good way to bring choice into the matter. Consider music hundreds of years ago, when all you COULD hear was local folk stuff.. If we are to promote individuality, then all sharing of communication is a necessity.. but are we trying to promote individuality?

the reasons for keeping people as a homogenous force are weakening..

Musicians have to eat, too.

I know a lot of musicians that do it as a hobby, and dont care who trades their stuff. Fine for them. If it's their livelyhood, though, then they should be compensated. It's their choice, not the public's.

The Apple way seems to offer the best of both worlds.

The artist and record companies make money and the consumer buys only whay he wants.
