the Military is a Special Interest Group
    #1742671 - 07/23/03 10:24 PM (13 years, 10 months ago)

how can republicans purport to be against special interest groups when they spend 367 billion a year on the military?

does anybody really believe this is neccessary?

military spending is a classic example of republican pork barrel. most of the military-industrial complex is owned by wealthy republicans.

not to mention military recruits- they get free college, paid labor, free living expenses (while they are in the army) and good job connections just for signing their rights away to the govt and doing what they are told for two years, no matter how unconscionable what theyre told is. Doesn't it piss anyone else off when they see dumb jocks in military uniforms driving mustangs that you and I paid for?

And if they really want national security, why do they sell truckloads of weapons to the entire world?

I don't recall Republicans taking a stand against special interest groups.

what about all the "whiny" minorities and gays and potheads...

typically, republicans have always stated oposition to special interests, and have often accused democrats of pandering to them in order to get political support.

I suppose, but that criticism is shared equally by both parties towards the other.

yeah, but as pork barrel goes, 367 billion takes the cake. do they even spend that much on social security?

Empire doesn't come cheap. Like Grav said in another post, it would be one thing to have troops overseas fighting to defend our national security but that is not what is happening, and its really not about the liberation of the Iraqi people either. I know two gentlemen who are both born in Iraq but live and work here in the states. I asked them is Saddam, in their eyes, truly evil. They said beyond all doubt yes he is. I then asked if they thought the US invasion was good for Iraq and they said no, to them its one Devil taking control from another. To them America is empire and the invasion is a violation of their nation, they wanted regime change but not the one forced upon them by our government. The only way the money spent on this war is justifiable, the way I see it, is that it insures control of the oil in the region. The government will swear its WMD, Iraqi liberation, the war on terrorism, I just don't believe them.

I was doing community service today, and a group of air force people had gotten the day off to come and help where I was working (habitat for humanity). of course they still got paid. I struck up a conservation
with one of them about the marines who got in trouble for speaking to the press about rumsfeld. she insisted that it was fair-- since after all, if they do what kind of thing, people would think poorly of the military!
I asked if she didn't think that if the military was being operated poorly it would be good for people to know? seeing as how the military is supposed to be for the people and all?

this set her back, so she replyed rather smugly that the military was "the presidents". I told her that seemed rather undemocratic. she didn't seem to understand. they get paid good. hired goons.

They don't get paid good at all, actually.

No they don't. If it wasn't for the military you wouldn't be able to argue about political crap on a message board. Have a little respect. Was this the community service you got for running from the cops?

No, we get paid fairly shitty compared to civilians who perform similar jobs.

there are perks, though. Few civilians get to play with machine guns.

to all the naysayers:

nobody said we didn't need a military. my question is why do we spend THAT MUCH on it, and why are there such huge and unneccessary recruitment drives?

defense is one thing, but digging an unneccesarily big "niche" in our economy is pointless and perpetuates stupidity.

there's something like 3-5 million military personnel in America! sounds like special interest to me!

Sounds like well spent, constitutionally authorized expenditures to me.

I'm well aware defense is and welfare isn't.

So try another "funny" comment. That one crashed and burned.

Welfare aside, do you really think that occupation of another country qualifies as "defense"?

Any other country? Depends on the country.

Iraq? To soon to tell, but it's not looking that way.

Absolutely. Germany is starting to become a waste, though.
