Syd Barret was a tripper, a heavy tripper, a very very heavy acid user (hah, obviously!) and i feel his music is VERY influenced by psychedelia, and somewhat caters to psychedelia. Where as Roger Waters brought pink floyd a more conventional route to commercial success.

When did barret leave..72? (could be way off?)...anyways, anything pre-Waters is definately more "in tune" to the psychedelic experience in my humbled opinion.

Syd left after the first or second album.. I'd say 1970, or 1971, cause around 72 he was doing his own stuff. Too bad what happened to him though, although I hear he's fine now.

"Atom Heart Mother, and earlier Syd Barret stuff is better. :P "

Yeah, I always loved the earlier stuss even better than DSOM and on, althouigh of course that's great too. Atom Heart Mother is great, I love every second of it, and there's still a tiny bit of weed in the crease of the sleeve from probably about 79 or 80. Piper at the Gates of Dawn is simply unlike anything else anyone ever really did; The Beatles were recording Sgt. Pepper just down the hall at the time in the same studio. Ummugumma is fuckin' great too, long extended live pieces, and the solo pieces that make up the second half are cool too...always loved 'Granchester Meadows' alot.

Actually, he did contribute 1 song to Saucerful of Secrets, 'Jug Band Blues, I think it's called, but you could tell on that one hos talent had already been bleached from him. Amazing stuff on the 1st one though, 'Lucifer Sam', 'Bike', 'Interstellar Overdrive', 'Astronomy Domine', 'The Scarecrow'...it's all good, and dripping with acid.

Syd Barret got kicked out during the recording of Saucerful of Secrets when they were still touring for Piper At The Gates Of Dawn,I believe-so that would be '68 or '69. Contrary to popular opinion,he didn't leave because he had done too much acid,as the rest of the band was using just as much.I'm sure acid and his emerging schizophrenia had something to do with it though. He just didn't like the commerical success the band was beginning to get and he didn't want to deal with the business aspect of music.

He actually sat in during much of the recording of WYWH. He apparently contacted the band after not speaking to them during several years during a period of relative sanity and coherance. There were actually some plans to reincorporate him into the band, but he despised WYWH and the they had another falling out. After that,he didn't contact the band for several years.

Syd's first trip, that's wild, definately a bit of history. I'd think it was probably acid, though; were shrooms really even known of then, circa '66? I mean, I know they were known of to a small extent at least, but I wonder if the emerging 'head' community of the time were aware of and could access shrooms.

i have 2 documentaries on the band and roger waters stated that none of them besides syd where using any drug except from alcohol, which syd was in with the chemist using any known concoction, then later he had moved on to mandrax and was institutionalized in the early 70's then was sent home and moved in with his mother.

Syd wasn't institutionalized, but I could be wrong. And it wasn't necesarily his drug use that was the problem, it was because he was very difficult to work with, due to the mental illness he had.

Pulse, the album, i cant listen to it anymore without a shiver running down my spine, reminding me of the pure bliss it conjured on my first trip. Shine on you crazy diamond :') is the happiest and most wonderful song in the world when tripping, it takes you to heaven and back, to heaven and hell, and on the pulse album (a live album by the way), all the time you are in the crowd at glastonbury 1970, u are standing next to roger watlers and syd barrett, you are there. I cant reccomend anything more.

Man i thought i was a Pink Floyd freak till i logged on to the Pink Floyd Forum and those freaks argue about how sorry Roger was and why David allows the sun to rise ect....it`s really crazy. Yeah, thinking about it, I guess the environmental conditions would be ameniable for mushrooms in England, and soi of course they would have been available for a long time. I guess, though, that people weren't generally aware of what they were until their use in Mexico was documented by Wasson, true?

There's a few stories about ancient buildings in Eire that have mushroom styled carvings and there's a report of a "mushroom intoxication" from the 17th century where a family ate semilancea and called the doctor out. The parents were sitting there feeling upset while their 7 year old son wouldn't stop laughing. Eventually it wore off without any problem.

But in terms of the general population - I suppose it would be the sixties before most people heard about them.

With regards to Syd Barrett,I read that he was actually kicked out of the band as result of a "bizzare LSD addiction" in which he would be too busy triping and writing the songs to ever play onstage. They actually got David Gilmour to play guitar because Syd would be in the back tripping. Eventually they got rid of him since he wasn't doing anything except songwriting. From what I read he WAS institutionalized (at least for a while), presumably from his obsession with acid.

If anyone here has read Nick Mason's book he talks about the situation with Syd. He talks about how when everyone went on vacation together Syd's girlfriend needed help because he was freaking out, thinking he can crawl up walls and such. They then institutionalized him for a while and did more touring with Syd's friend David Gilmour. After the tour, during the Saucerful of Secrets rehearsals and recordings Syd was in the band writing alot of it but David sang in most of them (except for Jugband Blues). Syd's appearances to rehearsals were erratic and so was his behaviour. So one day the band just decided to not pick him up from his apartment for recording. In later years Syd recorded solo albums with the help of David Gilmour and Roger Waters. After that the last time the band ever saw Syd was the recording of Shine On You Crazy Diamond for the Wish You Were Here album. He gained alot of weight and shaved every hair on him including his eyebrows. They played him the song and Roger asked "do you want to hear it again?" and he just replied "no...why would I want to hear it just after I already did". Go buy the book Inside Out by Pink Floyd's Drummer Nick Mason. It's his personal history. It goes from his pre-Pink Floyd days all the way to the end of The Division Bell Tour and the last Pink Floyd happenings other than the Live 8 show.

I've been told that "Jugband Blues" was the only thing he contributed to that album, but it sounds like him.
