Small Fruits?

What is the main cause of small fruits? I have my temp, RH, and air exchange at the proper levels. Are there any other causes of small fruits? Thanks.

What strain is it? some strains get huge and others stay small. Also, is it cakes or casings?

Cambodian strain. The substrate is vermiculite casing.

I found a head factor is also the amount of substrate available. If you have a very small casing small fruit will grow from it.

Mine are more than kind of small, the largest one is about an inch and half tall, Not one of them is more than 2/8ths of an inch wide. Though they all look as healthy as can be white stems, appropriately brown caps, just small. I have normal substrate depths. Should I bother re-casing with 50/50 mix at this point(I have about 20 of the above described fruits)?

just pick them and wait on another flush that will most probably contain bigger fruits says kramer

I would have to disagree with this. While a nice big thick casing can produce large fruits, a small casing can as well. Unless you are talking very small casings (less than 1/2 pint). I have seen very large fruits grow from very small casings, but the are not in large amounts.
The nutrient source and genetics have the most to do with mushroom size. But, if the proper environmental conditions are not met during fruiting, small mushrooms will result. Some strains are very, very small no matter what they are grown on...

So would you recommend re-casing?

Casing it with a better nutrient source, or a new casing layer? I would actually let them grow, and just make another casing if needed. No need to mess with this one unless you must. It would be a real pain to go through all that work only to get the same size mushrooms, dictated by genetics.

Okay well, I've picked the first super small flush, and the casing is giving off another small second flush. I'm just going to switch strains (got some B jars going). Though I'd still like to have a sample of the Cambodians for the future, could I just save one of the inch or so tall aborts and later grind it up and use it to inoculate?

Prolly just a really large pinset and genetics with a "normal" casing depth. This will happen; professionals will use a *really* thick substrate layer, like at least 6" (or more) which helps. Straw virtually gets rid of this problem since it's really thick. If you take care of it, your later flushes should get bigger (if not the second the third) but some substrains are just really prone to large pinsets and small fruits. It's a combination of all these things (substrate depth relates to nutrients available per surface area.) If you want to eliminate this problem the easiest way is prolly to use straw. As a general rule, the larger the pinset the smaller the mushrooms are but greater overall yeild. It IS a real pain-in-the-ass picking all the mushrooms, though, and then all the aborts. -- Micro
