I agree with Sub D. The problem with most PP containers is that you can't see clearly through them, so you won't know if you are growing contams or not. Drinking glasses work great.

did you check your local supermarket? I'm surprised that you can't find any jars. Of all the utilities that I've needed to find for mushroom cultivation the jars have by far been the easiest. Oh btw if your doing PF tek don't forget to get tapered jars.

check grocery stores, yes grocery. walk down the pet food isle and there should be a canning goods section. Mine has 1/2 pint, pint, and quart jars for 7,8, and 10 dollars. They sell lids, bands, plastic one piece lids, and pickling lime.

That PC is way too small I just bought myself a 22qrt pc for grains. But if they are BRF jars you need only to boil them or steam sterilize them for 90min. You could always use 1/4pt then double them up.

so dose mine and NOT A DAMM ONE SHORTER THAN 5" there is no way to fit a 5" tall jar in a PC who's in side is 4.06" x 14.25" right now I can't afford a bigger PC so I have to start with what I can get and build IF I could weld I would build an autoclave and steam it with a used boiler so far what I can't find are jars that will fit inside my PC IT'S winter what I do for a living has fallen on it's face like it dose every winter

I use PP containers.. Ziplock Twist n Seal to be exact..they have many sizes. You are right about them being like looking through frosted glass. But it is not such a problem that you can not spot a contam.. I have 6 pint PP containers.. and two 32 oz I picked up tonight at walmart for $1.97. But I use an assortment of both PP and glass jars.. I have 12 glass pints and 12 glass 1/2 pints as well. I have a nail bucket 80% colonized, it's about the size of a large chinese take out container, I have a pic of the container in my supplies gallery still, I think. lol

WBS baby. later spawned to coir.
only precaution needed was to wrap it TIGHT in foil i mean TIIZZZIGHT because the heat and pressure will cause the lids to pop off.
those are quart jars

If you're just doing cakes, you may want to consider boiling the jars/glasses in a large pot as opposed to going through all of this trouble just to find something that will fit your PC.

yea if your worried about cost just think of how few cakes you can fit in your PC and how much energy it takes to heat that bitch up. Look at the thickness of the metal it takes a lot of heat.
Anyway if you want to PC don't dismiss the possibility of using 1/4 pt jars (tapered of course) and doubling them up. But if straight up half pints will only do then you have to boil.

I'm thinking of using PP plastic cups (http://www.reipak.com/au/images/uploads/PP500S.jpg) but is it safe to use it? because heated polypropylene can exclude toxic (http://www.environmentalhealthnews.org/ehs/newscience/polypropylene-plastic-additives-break-down-with-heat). What do you think?
