Omano OM3 microscope

I found this scope in a local ad for $75. I am not very experienced in microbiology, so I am wondering if this is a good microscope for mycological use. The price seems right, I just want to make sure I can use the scope.  I hope to pick up a good dissecting scope at some point in the future as well.

This probably belongs in "Getting Started", but I can not start a thread there for some reason.

I've been out of the loop on scopes for a while and just bought one myself, but here's my 2c:

It's monocular (I prefer bincular, and it apparently reduces eye strain and allows depth perception), doesn't have a mechanical stage (I find at least an x-y mech stage essential) and only magnifies to 400x (400-1000x has been recommended to me for spores, so it should get you by)

I don't know what the optical quality of Omano scopes are, but IME "compact" usually means some sacrifice in quality.

If you're looking at it because $75 is all you have to spend on a scope, could be good.  If you're doing it to save yourself some money, maybe look at some other options unless someone vouches for the Omano scopes.

That scope is missing the 100x oil objective, which is important for studying spores.  Also it has no reticle so you can't measure anything.  I'd recommend a binocular scope with a 100x objective and a reticle.  Generally the cheapest scope that has these things is the Amscope B-100ms.  I have used that scope and was happy with it.

No, they are usually extra.  Sometimes you can just get the little plastic disc and put it into your existing eyepiece with a tiny drop of glue.

Hmm. I need to see structures that roughly 20mm in size, so I think this will suffice. This is directly related to my morning glory experiment, so I don't really care about spores. I can still make rough measurements using the Bio 101 ruler trick, good enuff for what I am doing.
