    #1732997 - 07/20/03 06:05 PM (20 years, 8 months ago)

mush mush suggests for 110 gr  grass seed  180 gr water for 720 ml jars.
sporeworks suggests for  500 gr seed 500 gr water for mycobags.
i have got 1 litre jars and i put 300 gr seed in them
i try  300gr  320gr  340gr  420 gr water  but all  my tries are result in failure..
mybackyard has became a grassyard  cause of my leftover.it can seem funny but  not. all the jars are clump....
i m looking for some help and i want to  understand why do i decrease the water ratio when the seed ratio was increases .?

I'm not sure because I haven't succeeded with grass seed yet.  I've only tried once though.  Here's my idea: soak the seed overnight and then drain all the extra water for 30 minutes or so.  Make sure there is no extra water.  This should make the seed absorb the optimal water content.

The FAQ says a 2:1 seed to water ratio.  So all of your ratios would have been too high.  Try my idea or go with the FAQ and put half as much water as seed.

Good luck

Ok fugu... Since you are so concerned, here is a way to get it just right:

Stamets claims the best ratio of water content for grain spawn to be 38-55% Cook your seed as before, varying the ratios of water to seed. Then take a sample of each experimental batch and weigh out a 100 gram sample (or whatever size). Take this seed that you weighed and bake in the oven around 300F. Once the grass seed is fully dry, weigh the whole sample again. The weight lost is directly proportional to the water content lost.

Taken from GGMM.

A 1:1 ratio in my opinion is too moist. Try saturating 4/5ths of your substrate then drain. Add the dry 1/5th substrate and mix well.
