Starting a wood lover outdoor patch - simple question. Or two.
    #17393608 - 12/14/12 07:11 PM (12 years, 1 month ago)

I have searched the posts and haven't found the answer(s) I am looking for.

Starting with a bit of harvested myco, I am skipping the canning jars and agar and just inoculating wood chips and cardboard indoors, adding more wood chips to existing myco into a bigger container until I have enough to start a modest outdoor patch.

I've read through this: http://www.shroomery.org/8673/Erics-Guide-To-Cultivating-Psilocybe-Azurescens-Cyanescens

And skipping all the way to step 14 I am wondering if I should somehow break up the mycelia as described or should I just gently mix in mycelium coated chips in with the chips for the bed prepared outdoors. How fragile is the mycelium? If I break it up into smaller pieces will that be advantageous? If so how?

Any tips would be great. I am new to this (noob) and relatively new to hunting (1 year plus) My indoor mycelium is taking off nicely.

Any tips or tricks or advice will be most happily accepted.
Thanks.

I would go read these:

http://mycotopia.net/archives/discus/messages/5/48.html
http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/17238526#17238526
http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/15445506

these all have great info that has helped me out quite a bit and i have also gleaned from Eric's Guide To Cultivating Psilocybe Azurescens/Cyanescens , and from all these i have had great success.
good luck and have fun..... O, and be patient in the begining.

AWESOME.

FrostE - Great threads. Are you in the PNW or CA (if you don't mind disclosing)?
This is precisely the modest sized patch I was talking about. I am wondering if I can get it from myco to fruit this season. No matter if not - there is no financial incentive, just good clean fun with science (cyans!)!

Mine are "friscosa" so hopefully being in their speculated native area will be a plus. I'll keep the board posted with pics and reports.

Thanks again.

you may have to do some extra research for your area with the temps.... how much longer it will stay cold etc... you need about 50 degrees for fruiting and then about 2 to 3 weeks of it from pins to maturity so, if you got about a month or so of the right temps you could pull it off... im new at it and this was my first time, and i have heard that cyans are one of the hardest to work with but i have got a lot of complements.... weathers that's just the stars aligning for me or actually me figuring this thing out slowly but surly, only time will tell. Once they kick off it is pretty amazing but in the very begining, it took a lot of patents, i almost gave up before i started seeing some awesome result, so dont give up if you decide to give it a shot, just be really patient and read as much as you can while being patient, and im not sure if you have but check out http://www.youtube.com/user/MushroomsRR?feature=watch
lots of great info. theres even a spot to download all those videos which i watch and love quite a bit.
If you have any questions feel free to ask, i do whatever i can to help you find info and share whatever i have learned, i have gotten lots of help from others as well so as i have freely recieved i freely give.
Good luck my friend

Thank you kind sir!
So you grew those from spores in a petri dish? That is awesome.
I have no current plans to get so technical. Way not meticulous enough. Just stem butts and wood chips for me, I'll leave the agar and such for the scientists.

Thanks

Most wood lovers can easily survive hot summers and also frozen winters.

cool Thanks TROLL EATER for info !

Here  in  zone 5 it is  very cold winters with brief periods as cold as  -20f  summers  hot 80s 90s brief periods as high as 110f it is  very humid

fall  and spring should have plenty of cool moist days and nights .

well  hummm  I will have to get my microscope out and see if I  can  find  some interesting  wood lover spores/cultures to look at .

what  species  types  might  do  good in my climate ?
