Looking for a good audio interface for my computer

As the title says I'm looking for an audio interface for my computer, with 2-4 inputs and outputs. I want to record guitar through a mic, and also be able to play directly into it and use headphones to listen (I live in an apartment, I can't be too loud most of the time).
Anybody have a good recommendation for <$200?

You could get a sound card years back with a front panel with tons of inputs/outputs, even had 1/4" jacks, so antiquated now though you'd be hard pressed to even get it working on a modern computer. Thats what i'd be looking for though, a sound card that has a breakout panel in a 5 1/2" bay.

The Tascam definitely looks nice. I might have to go for that.

Careful about USB audio interfaces; they often carry computer/processing noise into your final output stage... Firewire or even ethernet is a faaaaaaaaar superior protocol for audio.

I use a cheap Tascam US-100. I think I paid less than $100 for it at Musician's Friend. It works great and my output from it airs on radio stations, TV stations and movie theaters all over the Southeast. You could spend more, but why?

Better preamps, more channels, higher data flow, lower signal to noise ratio is why

Lol, rubbish mate. Firewire will carry just as much interior noise as USB (i.e more or less none if the DAC is good). USB 3.0 is considerably faster than firewire aswell, although 2.0 is sufficiently fast. Ethernet for audio? wtf are you talking about? You mean PCI?

Meh. For 200 bucks, you're not going to seriously outperform the $100 USB interface. Like I said, I make a living with mine and it sounds great.

Firewire has carried no noise in my experience... I've only used USB 2.0 for audio, so therein may lie the problem, another problem may be that on many of the USB interfaces I've used, they coupled both data and power streams over USB; introducing a lot of noise to the circuit (especially common in cheap models) - so my experience with 2.0 vs firewire is that firewire is without a doubt far superior ... I've used at least 4-5 USB interfaces and a similar amount of firewire ones. You know... Ethernet can carry incredibly high volumes of audio data btw The Souncraft VI series mixers instead of running 72~ xlr cables from FoH to stage you can run a single Ethernet cable from a stage box and carry all of that audio over one cable... fucking amazing.

No, he means ethernet for audio. Any cable capable of carrying a digital signal can carry an audio signal. You can also use ethernet to carry digital signals for AV equipment, too.

I'm looking at this one, it appears to be quite nice: http://us.focusrite.com/usb-audio-interfaces/saffire-6-usb
It is USB, but my computer doesn't have Firewire (whose does?), and it I haven't seen any inexpensive say Ethernet sound cards.

my bet is you have a MUCH weaker point in your signal chain than said usb cable anyway
