A friend got arrested on suspicion of making as the cops found a kilo of tree bark, a kilo of NaOH and some naphtha. They also found some powder which they think is deemsters but is not (its a completely different unrelated drug). There was no DMT found whatsoever and my mate was released on bail. They searched his home and found a shitload of powders but luckily completely legal ones, some mushrooms which were not hallucinogenic (go figure why someone keeps dried inactive shrooms ) and a bag of about 50 poppy heads.
Now he says the NaOH is for unclogging the drain and the naphtha being for cleaning paint droplets due to repair in his house (which is actually quite legit as the drain is clogged and there really was a repair). The bark is for making dye and the pods are for decoration.
The guy has a clean record, no previous offences but they got his laptop which is full of pictures of mushrooms and weed plants and all sorts of druggie shit.
Whats your verdict on this case?

The computer evidence doesn't seem too cool. How'd the cops end up in there in the 1st place?

Yeah it sucks cause he has some deemster recipes in the history, plus whole directories dedicated to drugs including many manufacture manuals (not sure if there is an actual spice recipe on the hard drive but there is Uncle Festers LSD synth shit). Then there's the STB tek in his internet history which totally fucks it up. The STB tek doesn't say in it anywhere do you think that makes it any better?
The cops were called by someone who for unknown to me reason had a key to the spot where the shit was stashed. The cops were pretty fucking stupid tho, they said they had to google that shit to figure out what it could be used for and couldn't even pronounce the full name of the drug which they're arresting him for
I think the computer fucks everything up. Do you think that since there is no actual spice found he could get a conditional sentence or get manufacture conspiracy charge and do time?

Since you say Class A instead of Schedule I, I am going to guess that your friend is in the UK.
I am not familiar with the case law regarding MHRB in his area, however his plant material does contain DMT so he might get charged with having a kilo of DMT.
He will have to wait to see what the results of the chemical tests say. I wouldn't count on them finding everything on his computer, police are often not too computer savvy and they have a lot of computers they need to examine in a small amount of time.
It can be pretty expensive to fight drug manufacturing cases, but since this one is marginal it's probably worth fighting. So for now, the best thing he can do is wait, and work as much as possible for money to pay a lawyer and expert witnesses. Lawyer shopping would be a good task for him at this point, but he shouldn't really commit to one or pay a whole lot of money until he knows what he is facing.
For now he should stay sober and out of trouble, and exercise a lot to help out with his mental health.
They could treat this as nothing, or a huge DMT lab, really depends on the whim and skill of the officers involved.
