registry problem
    #17388062 - 12/13/12 08:22 PM (11 years, 3 months ago)

Well, I know I fucked up this time. People always say not to mess with registry cleaners if you're not 100% sure of what you're doing, well I messed with it any ways. My moms netbook was running noticeably slow, so I ran ccleaner on it and cleaned the junk up and then ran the registry cleaner. I was smart though and made a back up before doing it. Then after that the wireless internet went out on it and it can't detect any networks even though my other computers are still connected, but the ethernet port still works though for the internet. I went to use the back up, but there's a problem though, for some reason when I click on the backup it tries to import it to the registry editor, but then it says

Quote:

Cannot import C:/Users/*****/Desktop/cc_20121212_204430.reg: Error accessing the registry.

Well I looked up what could be the problem, and a lot of people said that it could be the permissions, so I gave total access to everything and it still doesn't work. I'm gonna try redownloading the driver for the wireless, but after that, I'm out of ideas.

Any ideas?

Did you troubleshoot the wireless connection? Is the connection available in the connections manager? Is it enabled? Can you see available wireless networks?

I troubleshooted the wireless connection and it didn't fix or find any problems. The connection is available if I connect an ethernet cord, but when I try using the wirless, nothing pops up. It's enabled too.

This might sound dumb, but did you reset the router? Do you have any other wireless devices in the house, like a phone that can see the network?

I didn't reset the router. I've got an iphone and another computer wirelessly connected and they are working just fine.

I'm having trouble seeing how using a reg cleaner could knock out the wireless, but I'm not saying it didn't.

Did you try applying the backup after restarting in safe mode?

Nope, but I'll try that tomorrow.

Under what user are you logged in on the netbook? Unless the user is part of the administrators group, you probably won't be able to import any substantial registry files. But I wouldn't do that to begin with, to be honest. Just mess about some more with the wireless adapter; try to uninstall the driver and reinstall it, see if that makes a difference.

I found the problem thanks to gravija. I put my computer in safe mode to import the backup and it worked!

Thanks everybody!
