Re: Anyone lived in college buildings (not dorms)??? [Re: st1llnox]

It's possible to "live" in non-residential college buildings on some campuses, for a short amount of time at least.

I remember when I was moving out of the dorms my freshman year into a house a few streets down I got fucked over and was left homeless for a week.  I basically was living out of my car and in one of the general purpose buildings that housed mostly humanities classes until I found another house where I could rent a room.  I'm glad that happened though, as I ended up in the coolest fucking house ever.

I still had work every day so I used the rec center showers and everything worked out since I was still paying fees as a registered student for summer classes, but it really sucked.

I wouldn't recommend trying to pull it off unless it's an emergency.  For one, you either have to carry everything you own in your car (if you have one), increasing risk of theft, or pay for storage if you don't have a friend who has the space.  Another reason why I don't recommend it is because it's just stressful, even for short time periods.

If you have to do it, don't try to stay in chem labs.  If somebody finds you in the building when you're not supposed to be there it raises more suspicion than just squatting and that's something you probably want to avoid.  Just stay away from labs altogether.

Great advice.

st1llnox.. you mentioned you're a part of a fraternity yet you don't want to impose on anyone? I never was in a fraternity, but i figure that was kind of the idea, to help your brother's out.

I mean I can see if this is a pride issue, and you just want to bum around to bum around, but come on. You'll have a much easier time if you just reach out and ask for help from your frat. You'll be much less stressed and your grades will benefit from a nice couch or even a floor inside

It's not even about substance issues at this point, and it's dawned on me I don't really have much as far as substance issues if I stay off the K2. I don't know why that where oh where could by benzos be thread was received so poorly but whatever. And they're by prescription and I rarely abuse them, though many replies seemed to indicate people talking about ones they just bought for fun.

Dude this has so much appeal to me and I'd love to like live in the woods/survive on my own, but I'm injured right now plus winters in the midwest are unpredictable/hell. We're talking sick or dead if you sleep outside sometimes.

Can I presume that if they take your phone that they're also paying the bill for it? What is their reasoning for locking the basement? Surely they do neither of these just to torment you. Although your great escape could indeed work out for you, you'll start to miss all that they provided you with when you're sleeping in a friggin' college lab pantry

I moved out of my parents place a few months ago. We have a pretty healthy relationship but I still wanted full independence, no restrictions, privacy.. etc. It took a taste of the real world for me to realize just how easy I had it living in their home. Looking back, I wish I could rewind a few years and show them some appreciation where it's due.

i'm in a college apartment.

the plus side: it's cheap, quiet. i get to walk to class too.

the downside: no central heating, which translates to my apartment being about 80 degrees in the winter b/c it never gets cold here. there's a slightly diminished amount of privacy in that if i have a friend over who smokes weed we need to really keep it on the cool, because i can smell if my neighbor smokes a cigarette next unit over. i'm glad i don't smoke because that would be a problem.

i wouldn't discourage someone from living where i do, but as soon as my financial situation improves and i get a car i'm moving.

The first time or two they took my phone, I was like drunk or tripped out on K2. Another time

Now it's just standard practice that if I misplace my phone, it's in the safe. They can always find something; think like a parent emeritus version of the fight or flight response as desperation sets in (since they're kind of figuring out I don't care). I'm stubborn, they're stubborn, and they're catching on that I'm not going to be parentally "trained"; I'm a highly analytical college student, not a puppy or a 5-year-old. It ought to be about discourse rather than a carrot on a stick at this point.

They locked the basement because I went down there and smoked weed under the deck a couple times. They also think I had someone over and hooked up down there once, but this is not true. What pisses me off though is that I have tons of books and other stuff stored down there.

Your best bet is to take on a few student loans and get some roommates.

In my experience, the few areas that are open/available 24/7 aren't suitable for sleeping/living.

I'm PhD bound and even though you can defer payments through enrollment in graduate school, interest starts after you finish your bachelor's degree. If I got into a fully funded PhD the first time around, I'm looking at
$100,000-150,000 when I can finally start paying it.

If I don't get into a good PhD program the first time around and have to do a stepping stone masters, we're literally looking at me being 30 and payments coming due on $300,000-400,000. These numbers are with postdoc time factored in, but still  :wowz:.

I just remembered my BFF is coming back from college, and my ride doesn't even need to be in town anymore so he's making the trip for me so I think just having him drop me off will be a dick move. A 1 day vacation and then being with my best friend again I think will hold over my sanity till next semester.

I think I'm going to try to convince the CSAC/social worker dude at my pdoc's practice to convince my parents we need to ignore everything that happened since I made the mistake of trying AA last summer, just give me all my freedom back, and let me go. Not that I especially deserve it, but I think they could see the sense in it if he points out that this has been a thing about stubbornness and broken spirited-ness and that nobody's going to breath easier as long as they're still constricting me.

Ya'll are a really helpful forum

True, but not having a place to live is likely to have a substantial impact on your academic performance and chances of getting into graduate school.  Although the competitiveness of graduate school depends on the program.

Hmm yeah, this would just be short term and I think my parents would freak out enough after a week or two that they'd be willing to reconsider.

They just came back to me with a kind of counteroffer though.
