Syringe life span...
    #1738422 - 07/22/03 03:59 PM (14 years, 9 months ago)

OK..I have been out of the game for awhile and I still have all of my equipment...agar, prints, perti dishes, I even still have some of the old zoodoo! Anyways, I have kept some amazon, cambodian, and EQ syringes in the fridge for 1 1/2 years..will these still be viable for my future projects? I have to go back and re-read all of my grow logs to brush up on the hobby!

Try making a mycelium solution using the Honey Tek. If your spores are still viable you will see mycelium in the water in a few days and then all you have to do is make a mycelium syringe from that and knock up your jars. Good luck.

Should be OK as long as the syringes were produced with the utmost care and sterility in the beginning. Spores are more durable than most give them credit for.

Personally I used syringes 9 months old without any problems.

Syringes should be used within a month or two, but have been known to last 6 months or more. the reason for using them soon is that spore prints can contain things other than mushroom spores due to the the fact that mushrooms do not grow in perfectly sterile conditions, and anything you do to destroy bacteria or other spores may harm the mushroom spores. the idea is that you have young vital mushroom spores able to out compete any other little bugs that may be in that syringe. Syringes last longer when kept in a sterile plastic bag in the refridgerator. As for spore prints, if kept cool and dry they can stay vital for a year or two with no problems. And lastly cultures take more care and better equipment to maintain than a newbie even needs to think about. start with the basics. baby steps before leaps.

Welcome to my world!

Syringes can last only a few months, to several years. Depends on the quality of the syringe making process. Prints can last for many years, if kept dry and cool they can last 5-10 years and still produce. Longer term storage is possible of cultures and spores as well, but requires special care and expensive techniques, such as freezing in liquid nitrogen with a cryoprotectant or freezing with mineral oil.
