Look for lumber companies in your area, you might get sawdust for free. I'm sure they'll have woodchips for sale too.

You can get the pellets at Lowes.....3.95 for a 40lb bag right now. Its a seasonal item, so its hard to finsd in the summer months. There are also several place around me that deal with tree removal and\or firewood. They are usually happy to give away the chain-saw dust from processing it. They also usually mulch the smaller scraps so they usually have a nice pile of woodchips\mulch to use and its always good quality hardwoods.

oak fuel pellets (got mine from Tractor Supply), aspen pet bedding wood chips (pet store, Tractor Supply). I found it impossible to find wood chips of any other sort besides mesquite wood chips for smoking meat and that's way too expensive

From the forest of course!! We are fortunate enough to have 9 acres of hardwood to have at our disposal. We pull the dead and down stuff out and chip it all down. For under $300 we now have at least 2000 lbs of wood chips! It's a bit more work but we know the source is good and clean!
Just had the thought while chipping the other day. You could talk to local people who are in a need of thinning their properties and offer to do it for free. I'm sure a few would be more then happy to let you 'clean up' their dead tree's. Where I'm at there is oak 100 miles both directions of me.

Here in New York there are towering piles of steaming wood chips damned near EVERYWHERE post-super storm Sandy. The sound of wood-chippers could be heard for weeks after the storm for 12 hours a day. I was wondering if those could be used. I have a feeling that its a mix of hardwood (oak) and lots of pine, too, which probably would be less useful...but what do I know.
I've been using wood pellets. They are super cheap, easy to find at this time of year, and storage is no problem.

i get all my woodchips free from tree pruners but the saw dust i have a hard time as well. so fuel pellets for saw dust then eh? and that sounds somewhat affordable to start but i need to find a place to get large quantities for free! i could see it going to waste somewhere and i like the idea of utilizing waste products instead of purchasing bags of proccessed pellets.

LOL. How much do you want? Technically you can buy about 1 bdu (2400 lbs bone dry weight) of softwood chips for about $100. Talk about cheap.
Going and chipping it yourself and/or asking small businesses might take longer but would be free.
