Question about casing.
    #1738135 - 07/22/03 02:09 PM (14 years, 6 months ago)

I'm trying casing for the first time and I have a question. I used 1 inch of verm then 2 crumbled up fully colinized brown rice flour and verm cakes that made about a 1 1/2 inch layer then I covered it with about 1/4 inch of verm. The casing has been in a warm dark place for about 10 days. I can see a few blotches of white in a few spots that are about the size of marbles. When should I put the casing under the light to be fruited? Does all of the vermiculite on the top have to turn white?

put it under a light
it does not all have to be white before it starts to pin

You should spot case that thing in order to get a more even distibution of mycelium coming up to the top. That way you will get a more even pinset.

patch case then induce pinning conditions. You don't want the surface to covered and/or colonized in mycelium, once you see the colonization occuring just below the surface of the casing then begin the fruiting cycle. Give plenty of light (12/12) and make sure the casing layer is moist but not matted down with water, allow a little bit of CO2 to build, then once you see hyphal knots begin fanning on a more regular basis.
