good casing mix?

all i got here is....vermiculite...wbs....brf.....could i use verm/brf for a casing mix or verm/wbs....cuz thats all i got.....

do you mean using uncolonized brf/wbs?
if so, don't use either. use straight verm

yes uncolonized...my casin tek says to put dry verm on the bottom and spay moist then put the broken up colonized wbs over that then to put the casing mix on top of that and the tek writer said he used coir and two other things....i forgot what they were....

it sounds like you're using the 60/40 tek. the casing materials include coir, vermiculite, and calcium carbonate. re-read the tek

im using casing 101...it didnt say anything about preparing the casing mix....thanks for all the help

would i be able to just use verm like u 1st suggested, i dont want to have to go buy any more stuff right now......only 2 of my 8 jars survived...i think ill get the coco coir stuff next time....

yea you can drop a thin layer (like 1/4 inch, or none even) of damp verm on the bottom, then add your crumbled substrate, then another layer of damp verm on top of that. the top layer should be no more than 1/4 the depth of the substrate. if i were you i'd sterilize the damp verm in the microwave for 10 minutes and let cool before use (two 5 minute sessions with a stir or a shake in between).

The casing layer has to be as bland as possible (to avoid contams), but with the ability to hold water and make it readily available for the mycelium. Straight verm is OK.
