B. Caapi Propagation Questions
    #17379006 - 12/12/12 09:52 AM (11 years, 1 month ago)

Hi

I noticed a piece of vine from one of my B. Caapi plants was almost severed so I decided to try to make cutting to propagate. However, I am unsure of how many leaves it should have and whether the leaves should be cut in half or something to reduce perspiration.

At the moment I have 4 leaves on it, two of which are cut in half.

Can anyone tell me if I should clip the other leaves or even take any off?

It doesn't really matter for caapi in my experience, but I do live in a fairly humid place so if you live in a desert like climate it might be wise to make it a little humidity tent.

All you really need a a couple of nodes. I would leave it as is. Caapi is very quick to shed leaves when it needs to do so.

I live in a Meditteranean climate. It's Summer at the moment. I have the cutting in a humidity dome which I spray multiple times a day and it has a fluorescent grow light.

I used a semi softwood cutting.

We also have humid stormy weather at the moment which makes it good for tropical plants but I'm not sure how long that will last.

Sounds good. Caapi is one of those plants that is hit or miss for rooting for me. It is either very easy or the cuttings perish quickly. I think my best success rates are ~70%.

Keep on tending to it lightly and I think you'll have some luck.

I'd say it depends on the size of the leaves. If you have huge leaves, cut them. Those tend to sap a lot of moisture and end up falling off anyway. But it sounds like you should be ok if some are already cut in half.  The humidity tent is always a good idea too.
