First active patch found...Psilocybe allenii...Central Valley Ca
    #17375907 - 12/11/12 05:54 PM (11 years, 1 month ago)

So...Psilocybe allenii, is that now the official name for what has been called P. cyanofriscosa?

I was walking about near a landscaped/wood chipped area not even specifically looking for mushrooms, but given the time of the year my eyes are always scanning for them (regardless if they're active). A cap caught my eye, so I hopped up into the landscaped planter and took a gander at what looks to be some Psilocybe allenii. I was hesitant at first, I didn't want too get too excited like I have in the past only to find out they're some other species upon a closer look.

I can't find my camera charger and for some reason my phone isn't letting me upload/send the images, I would like to get a pic of them on here for 100% confirmation. I've been on these boards for a while and know the appearance of them rather well at this point, though I've only seen them in person in their fresh state once....I'm pretty damn sure they're Psilocybe allenii.

Habitat: The habitat was a landscaped area with wood-chips & shrubs/grass/small trees. On the north side of a building away from sun exposure, very moist & cool.

Gills: Younger/smaller specimens have a creamy off-white color, the older & larger specimens have more of a tan to dark brown appearance. Not quite attached to the stem, there seems to be a notch of space between the gills & stem where the stem meets the cap.

Stem: Silky white, hollow...darkening/bruising after picked, faint streaks of blue but mostly just a darkening. Some mycelium visible at the base of the stem, branching into/onto the wood chips. 0.75 to 1.5 inches long.

Cap: Most of the caps are tan/beige, some darker with more of a chestnut/brown color, thin faint line of green/blue around the outside edge of the caps. All of the caps were convex, the older specimens had mostly flattened caps. 0.5 to 1.25 inches wide

Spore print color: *waiting*

Bruising: Darkening, some faint signs of blue. Some faint blue/green was present around the edge of the caps even before picked.

Location: Central valley California

If these are not an active Psilocybe species, what else could they possibly be? Again, I'm working on getting a pic posted.

As I picked a few I noticed many more small pins and undeveloped mushrooms among the wood chips, I probably even accidentally stepped on a few. I left many behind in hopes they will grow some more in the coming days. I'm sure there's quite a few variables that come into play, but I'm curious how long it takes these things to grow and how soon I should return to pick?...We should be getting 1/2 to 1 inch of rain in the next 36 hours, and have been having some very foggy & moist nights, foggy enough to leave everything wet.

Also curious how I can possibly propagate these things to spread them among the town. Can the stem buts be put between moist cardboard then the cardboard put under wood chips?

Actives are rare for us here in the 209 so I sure hope you found some! If you do manage to get some pictures put em on mushroom observer as well please

Edit: Maybe MO might even let you upload them from your phone? If they do then you can just post the links from there on here.

They are rather rare indeed. I've been on the hunt for actives in the area every fall/winter for the past few years with no luck, other than some Gymnopilus found in the woods along the Stanislaus river.

But it seems like every year since I've been paying attention, more and more people are finding them out hear. I've heard more reports of them being found in Manteca, Stockton, & Sacramento areas so far this season alone than I have the past two seasons all together. Seems as if these Psilocybe allenii are spreading out and making the valley their home. Though our summers are intense, and every winter we usually have a good hard freeze or two.

I know they're out here, though perhaps far & few between, it is just a matter of looking in all of those nooks & crannies. The area I found them is a very public area with a fair amount of pedestrian and foot traffic. The area has TONS of wood-chipped landscaping, and I only glanced over a fraction of this area. I plan on returning in a few days after the rains, hopefully I'll find my camera charger by then.

One good thing about the valley...I don't think there are many heads out this way interested in or hunting for actives, or even know they can be found out here. Opposed to the stories I hear from folk in the bay sometimes having their patches raped.

And yea, once I get some pics I do plan on posting on Mushroom Observer.

You should consider posting your central alley actives pictures in the 'official central valley actives' thread, when you are able to take some.

Attn PWN hunters: If you should come across a bluing Psilocybe matching P. pellicolusa please smell it.
If you detect a scent reminiscent of Anethole (anise) please preserve a specimen or two for study and please PM me.

Will do :yesnod: ...didn't see that thread at first.

I'm still looking for my camera charger. Next time I return to the patch I'll borrow a friends camera if I have to. I have a feeling there are a few more patches in the vicinity of where I found them.

Also, a few of the caps did end up dropping spores, showing a brown/purple color.

So you have phone pics right? What methods have you tried to upload them? Have you tried sending the pictures to your email via text message then uploading them from there?

I do & I have....

I tried to forward them to my self in an e-mail from the phone a few times using a few different methods, and it just says "sending", but never actually sends the message. I even tried sending them to a friend's e-mail & phone, so he could e-mail them to me, and it wouldn't send to his phone/e-mail either. It's a somewhat new android/smart phone, no doubt it's probably the phone as it has some other issues too...P.O.S.
