I am making agar. Can I pc the bottle on its side? How tall should the water be?

The moderator will probably move this thread to a different formum but for now, tell us more....does it have a screw cap? If you lay it down all of the agar will likely boil out of it. find a different container. a narrow mouth mason jar will work in a pinch. also a fruit juice jar with a small hole and a piece of sfd or even poly fill will also work.. probably better than laying down a jar in the pc.

You can lean them against something, or get some shorter beer bottles that fit and cook up two or three of them. This is more of a basic cultivation question, might get a better response there.

beer bottles have worked well for me for my agar! i stuff the top with polyfil and put tin foil over that. call me clean but i have had minimal contamination with agar dishes like that.

Nevermind I put in two quart jars and put them together, then leaned the bottle over between them. Worked fine. Just poured my first plates, and used a syringe and print to try and inoculate them. Hope everything went ok.

This is exactly how I do it now too, I've had less contamination using them and the beer bottles are much easier to handle than anything else I've tried.

the beer bottle idea sounds like a winner, gonna have to try that soon
one issue I keep coming to is getting pour the agar before it cools to a gel in the PC'd container -- been using wide mouth half pints and pouring before I cook

We use the same quilted 32oz. juice bottles as Aloha. These bottles have great pouring characteristics and are very durable due to their heavy quilted neck. A lot of organic juices are sold in these bottles and they will produce a 1/2 liter of agar well. The picture below is from Santa Cruz Organic® juices.

curious, do you put a hole in the lid with an sfd or do you just fill it up halfway and screw the cap on?

I put the 500ml H20 + agar ingredients in, put the lid on and shake like hell, then I loosen and re-seat the lid on (not real tight) and let 'er go. It freaked me out when I saw them do it at Aloha, but they claimed the jars never broke and shortly after taking them out of the autoclave, they would seal. We always kept and opened the jars in the airstream of the hood. I've done it that way ever since with no problems at all.

Dang you don't cook it before you put it in or at least heat the water? I have always had a hard time getting agar to dissolve in room temp water. Usually heat it in a sauce pan to a simmer for a bit then put in media bottles and autoclave. Would love up be able to eliminate that step

I have never worried about dissolving bulk MEA before pressure cooking. Essentially I do it the same as OIC with a filtered lid. I do boil before slanting but not for plates.

I might use warm water on a cold day because, yes LME is hard to dissolve in cold water (thus the "shaking like hell). Come to think of it, they never even warmed the water at Aloha, and it was 20°F when I was there!

The juice bottle looks like an excellent method. Can't use it for tomorrow's plate pour because I don't have such a bottle yet (checked the fridge).
So does this mean I give up my whiskey bottles and stop drinking Bacardi?

No, now you can use the juice as a mixer during the Holidays . . . and explore a lot of new drinks containing Rum.

I switched over to this juice bottle on OICU's advice a while back after trying a few different methods. I'm not going to bother experimenting with anything else- it works phenomenal.
Now if I could just get my hand through the opening to wash it...

If you manage that, I want pictures

Just reading through, I don't have much to contribute on agar containers as of yet.
But I do know of handy brushes to help clean tricky bottles.
Hombrewing Bottle Brushes. various sizes, lengths, and kinks.
