I was hiking today in the mountains in East San Diego County and came across so many of these it was unbelievable. The clusters were simply everywhere, growing at the base of dead and fallen pine trees.
Thanks in advance for confirming or denying my suspected ID.
Habitat: Wood - Found in forest with mixed conifers and oak, growing in large clusters from a tree stumps and fallen trees
Gills: The gill color varied from a white to a light cream/light tan, seemingly slightly darker in the older mushrooms.
Stem: Fleshy and solid with partial veil, cream color to tan.
Cap: Dark tan to brown. Smallest were about an inch across (partial veil had not opened.) Largest was 5 inches across.
Spore print color: White.
Bruising: No color change was observed.
Location: Southern California Mountains

Very suspect indeed....
MO has what you are looking for. The stalks don't look quite brown enough for ostoyae but getting species of this genus a hard with most of em.
could be ostoyae though.

edit- also, the lack of prominant scales makes me think it is something else.
edit numero 2- They do have scales. Derp. And a hell of a lot of spores. holy crap!

Some of the older bunches looked as though they had a container of talc poured over them!

Yes, we will, thanks. My wife is working on the cleaning and parboiling as we speak. Apparently, her mother taught her to parboil them twice, with fresh water for each boil.
