Cased too thin
    #1736196 - 07/21/03 09:37 PM (13 years, 4 months ago)

Hey, I just made my first case per 50/50 tek and it looks like its a little too thin, yes i know no problem there but there is still big peices of the cake (I cut them in cucumber slices) that are sticking up a bit too far. I just went back to check on them in a few (4) days and I notice that I already have some pins growing. Is this going to be a problem if I just pick them off/leave them alone and cover as much as I can after wards about a 1/2" on top? will the mycelium network keep growing and overtake the superlayer w/ no probs? Not sure what to do or if I should be concerned  there really isn't as much casing as I'd like and I want to get a decent no. of flushes, wish
I had ome pics. Still, i'm happy about nice size pins after only 4-days. Sorry about the long post , any comments  , thanks

Not a long post at all. You don't need to let the top layer be colonized, in fact you don't want that. If the chunks of mycelium are not connected, they will probably produce a smaller flush but that's not a big problem.
You don't have to do nothing, just wait untill it grows.
Btw, next time post this kind of questions on cult forum, there are more people viewing that forum and you could get more responses.
PM me if you want the post to be moved.

Yeah -- this can be a bit of a problem , but like MAIA said -- don't let it overtake the casing. The goal, IME, is to get it to poke through evenly all over and then fruit it. You don't want big patches on the casing; these can dry out and make everything more likely to contaminate, and it reduces your flushes.

IMO, it's a lot easier if you break the substrate up smaller than that -- if you have an odd - shaped surface this uneven colonization is a lot more likely to take place than if it were more "flat."

It's up to you....
