lime

My friend wanted to know if you can use pelletized garden lime to buffer the ph or if he needs some other type.

Not too sure about that, sounds like it might be too concentrated. To be absolutley sure just make sure you get  hydrated lime only  ( doesn't have to be HI-Yeild, per ryches' 50-50 tek) just make sure it's hydrated or you can probably kiss your case goodbye , unless you/some else knows something I don't. hope this helps

Now I'm curious, Anno, (by the way, I love your pics ) Why is it the best to have an oyster shell/hydrated lime combo for optimal results? I'm guessing that the oyster shell acts as a substrate enhancer (by reduction of density therefore enhancing airation/surface area) while acting as an alkaline buffer for the lime (just a guess there)? Apparently both compounds are just oxalated forms of Ca+ with the high potency lime acting as the stronger reducing agent. (CaO, Ca+1 O-1 [O should be e-2] so CaO=e-0 Now I know all compounds are supposed to have a net e- of 0 but it seems that Cao might have an e-1 with the O-2&Ca+2 therefore CaO=e-1 and would snag H+ right up, still O is much more electronegative then Ca so I can see how it induces hydroxylation more readily and carrying the larger electronegative charge subsequently induces oxidation of water in the substrate which increases OH- the soil (hence the Ph increase) The CaO2 should then have Ca+4 2,O-2=e-o but I'm still not sure why this would make it a better buffer (decreased electron density therefore less total elecronegativity?). Anything wrong with this? Am I missing something  Technical explanations are very welcome

I know I should never trust the claims on the packaging since they are just trying to get me to buy the product, but the pelletized lime I bought claims to be more sensitive than hydrated. It says that hydrated lime often damage plants if used improperly.

it can damage plants, hrydrated lime is very powerful shit and don't hold the ph at optimal level 7.5 for very long.to much if this shit and you'll fry your crop.oyster shells would be better cause it'll maintain the ph level for longer peroids of time,so when your shroom start producing and the acidity of your substrate goes below 7.5,the oyster shells are still there to save your ass.most of the time it's not that important to adjust the ph, it's just not need.get a ph tester before you burn something up.
