This post reminds me of a thought that crossed my mind somewhere around 4:30 am in a fit of insommnia.

I am in the middle of building a flow hood / work table. It will be powered by dual squirrel cage fans and 2 prefilters leading to the .3 Micron HEPA. The HEPA filter is actually a filter meant to be used on a Wetvac.

Here's the question: Could I have saved money by using a wetvac as the blower motor as well? It would be loud but is there a reason why this wouldn't work?

Pic of Plans

For those of you that take the time to check out the design... The measurements aren't exact and this is an internal view, of course the tower is enclosed and sealed. The top of the table has holes drilled on the area above the tower for airflow and hopefully a lot of it!!! I'm very open to suggestions if you have a tweak that would make this better

If it don't work like that, I bet a regular Hepa in there would work well. Does the air come up through all the holes, or just in the middle? Either way, nice work! It looks well made. You can come over to my house and build one whenever you want.

On second thought, you really can since your just down 35!:)

Ok, I am a little confused as to the different design's of flow hoods.  I thought the purpose was to provide a flowing column of air to work in that was free of contaminates, like  this.

All of the ones I have seen posted here, have no discernable (at least to me  :frown:) area to work in like the one above.

I was curious as to how effective makeing a large one that flowed really well would clean a large area, perhaps a closed off room?  Would it be clean enough to work in with out much fear of contaminates?  I don't think this would be foolproof, but would it work most of the time?

I was wondering because I have seen many home a/c systems being installed now with UV sterilizers, HEPA filtration, and one other form of air purification that has now slipped my mind.

The idea is to have a clean flow of air to work in. You can get a similar effect from the Captains Oven Tek
In the case of the underpowered flowhood you would be much better off with a closure to keep contaminated air from back flushing down onto your work. This table is far from underpowered so there is little chance of that happening.
With that said I have bought a clear sterlite container and if I need to I will cut an opening in the front so I can work in the semi enclosed area, but I don't think I'll need it.

The filter I went with should work well but only time will tell.

I'll let you know as soon as the voltage converter comes in. I am toying with the idea of a layer of poly filter just under the holes in the tabletop to defuse the air in the event that the air is somehow uneven.

My pet sloth Pat is the one that commissioned this table. I think she is somewhere near 35

The area to work is IN FRONT of the hepa filter, as close as possible.
If you matched your blower and the filter right, then you will work in a tunnel of sterile laminar flowing air.
