i've never done 'bikram' yoga but i've done hot yoga which i'm guessing is pretty much the same thing except maybe bikram has it's own philosophy? the class i go to heats the room to 95 degrees. it's aweosme. especially on a cold day. it's kind of funny when someone that's never done yoga before comes to the class for their first ever yoga experience. really not a good class for a beginner!

Good question! If Bikram has it's own philosophy I'm not familiar with it - but yup, essentially I think it's the same. Yikes, the place I've looked at goes to 104.
I've had fainting problems in the fast, simply from having a sensitive "fainting reflex", and I'd probably have to be a bit careful - but I've never had issues with fainting during yoga or other activities and I tend to partake in a lot of high-adrenaline stuff, only seems to happen when I'm just like..strollin' through CVS or something like that.

Sometimes I just feel so stiff and bleh in the winter time that I think I'd really benefit from hot yoga so

you should try it and just take it slow! i go to hot yoga every sunday, it's my church. the only time i ever get dizzy/faint in class is coming up from sitting or laying position too quickly. but that is something that happens to me often day to day anyway, low blood pressure perhaps. just stay aware of your body in class!

Sometimes I think that I'd benefit from yoga. I don't have time for it though. :frown:

Nah. I'm way too busy with school & stuff, plus I'm not gonna sacrifice going to the gym. Once I graduate I'll probably take it though.

I used to do hot yoga daily, and volunteered briefly at a studio during the summer.

It is very difficult, but i started without any yoga background even though it kicked my ass at first. Despite doing it consistently for months i was constantly improving, going deeper into my poses while reaping greater benefits. I would say it contributes greatly to ones sense of well being both in body and mind.

That said, now i work a stressful job and haven't really gone to any classes for 2 years. The couple drop in's i've done nearly killed me. I am stiff in the mind and body and i find going "here and there" to be very very difficult.

In other words, in my case, consistency is key.

And/OR, my job is destroying my body and soul.

I'm confused as to how one gets started.
Just join a class???
Do you have to join at the "begining", or can you join whenever?

YMCA? Private? Google search + city?
I can see the benefit, but am gun shy to start something so new.
I love my summer softball and winter bowling, but they're both only 1 day a week and I like getting out and getting refreshed.
(And I'm so afraid I'll rip some ripe ass up in there :undecided:)

i think with the ymca their programs run on a schedule so you have to join at the beginning of a session, but with 'private' or locally owned places you can usually just drop in a class whenever. just pick a beginner's class. i would definitely google search it if i were you.

Just curious, what's the usual demographic for yoga?
Are they classes, sessions, something else?  I.e. are they always teaching, or do they do it once and then instruct to go to "x" pose?
That's another thing, I don't like the word "pose". Not sure I wanna pose. I think I'll shapeshift :ninja:

where i go it's typically women age 20-50 with a few men in their 20-30's. that's just the class i go to though. they're "classes", i've never been to one that had less than 5 people in it, i've been to one that had over 20 but that's rare in most cases. you will be instructed throughout the whole class, unless it's a "free practice" but those are separate classes. if you're interested, just try it out! don't over think it yo. and don't wear shorts that are too short, heh heh. PM me if you want!

The good thing about Yoga is that you can jump into a class at whatever level you are at, Because you start at your own pace. You obviously wanna start at a beginners class though. The instructors will teach you many poses and breathing techniques, and if they are good teachers, they will help you if you are not doing the pose correctly. if you go to a class continually, they will start teaching less, and letting you try on your own... So instead of teaching you X pose, they will tell you to go into X pose. But if they see you are having difficulty, they will certainly help you.

Went to bikram yoga yesterday. MAN!!!! So intense! I hgave never sweat so much in my life. I thought I was going to pass out for the second half of class. But I made it through and really felt myself flowing inside and out. Felt very good. But i ended up with a bad headache a few hours after.

I'm a big fan of Ashtanga Yoga. It's very straight forward and flows. It's will definitely challenge you mentally and physically. Here is a good place to start if your looking at strength and flexibility.

That has to do with dehydration... Next time drink extra water

Yea i usually drink alot of water every day and drank one bottle during the class and maybe 2 after. But Im sure if i had more it would of helped.  I had a kava drink afterwords, that probably didnt help.

But once in a while(one day a month at most) I take morphine for pain. When I take it, it helps me TREMENDOUSLY with my physical pains... When Im not in pain, I can exercise, do yoga

Transcendental yoga is key (or so I read)
