Does a tub need air?

A friend on here once told me that he prefers not to put holes with polyphil into a tub. I have done it like this but it seems like the myc isnt moving very fast in the tub.
It worked last time but took about a month for the myc to spread all over the tub. I think im going to try it the ol fashion way from now on but what can I do to speed up the myc? I couldnt put a hole in it now I dont think.
Thanks guise.

This should not matter for colonization, because the holes are supposed to be taped anyway, you want high co2 levels.
You add poly fill once the whole tub is colonized and fan out the tub to fruit it, releasing the co2 and giving it FAE(Fresh Air Exchange).

Your best bet is to drill out 2 1.5 inch holes spaced and cenetered on each long side and 1 hole on each short side. All holes about 4.5 inches from the bottom of the tub. Then you keep them all taped up for colonization and the small amount of air flow that a lid that isn't syran wrapped down will allow is enough GE to let excess CO2 seep out.
I personally drill 1 extra hole almost completely to the top of one of the short sides and fill it very tightly with polyfil for colonization. Then I syran wrap the top. I like to do this because it actually has a filter material rather than just allowing whatever air makes it into the lid. Once colonization is over I then remove the polyfil from my top hole, tape it up, and then untape the bottom holes, hit em' with some polyfil and remove the syran wrap from the top. Has worked great for me for over 2 years.

That's very thorough of you. I think I will do this on my next bulk grow. My last one bunked cause I lost all but 1 of my pf jars to mold in my friend's old-ass closet. So I went 1:8 in a mini tub.
The myc took off but slowed the 3rd week & just stopped after 4. Not a contam in town. Finally my will broke & I peeked-myc was grey and dead, but no contams. I assume the myc suffocated

Gray and dead is not suffocated. It's mold.

Grey and dead is probably cobweb mold. 1:8 ratio is a bit small if you ask me but others may disagree. I personally like a 1:1 ratio but 1:2 or 1:3 work great as well. The closer to a 1:1 ratio the faster your tub will colonize.
You may want to check up on your sterilization technique. It sounds like somewhere along the lines you're introducing contaminants.
